Again the Bee Gees proved to Toronto audiences that they are undoubtedly the finest vocal group still existing in pop music today. The lavish string arrange- ments provided by the New York Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Geof- frey Westley gave the Bee Gees’ giant hits. such as “Lonely Days", “Massachus- ettsâ€, “Wordsâ€, “Run To Me". “Let There Be Love" and “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart", the magic feeling which before could only be captured by the use of quadraphonic recording. The Bee Gees, in the first five songs performed, includ- ing the likes of “The Road To Alaska", “Marley Purt Drive" and their new single, "Mr. Natural", played with- out the support of the orch- estra. of the orchestra definitely put to an end the false rum- ors that the Bee Gees were- n't capable of handling their songs with only the use of their own musical abilities. After retiring for a brief intermission the Bee Gees returned. with the 30-piece symphony orchestra from New York, to perform thir- teen more songs. In each song the blending of their voices employed flawless perfection which in turn left one feeling that the 30-piece orchestra was merely a back- ground music provided to enlighten their voices to an even greater extent. As ex- pected. the final song. “Lonely Days", created hy- steria among the audience. Although the Bee Gees sel- dom return for an encore. the five minute standing ov- ation they received. from the often “too hard to please' Torontonians, moved them, emotionally, to do so. The people who attended the BG Concerts on the evenings of February 17 and 18 will most certainly remember the magical feeling that the Bee Gees left them with. After listening to these first five songs, the absence The Bee Gees first ap- peared on stage in Manches- ter, England in 1956. At the time Barry was nine years old while his twin brothers, Maurice and Robin Gibb were six. In 1958 they moved to Australia and in 1960 they appeared weekly on television in Brisbane. Al- though they were well known in Australia, they wanted in- ternational recognition. So early in 1967, they returned to England and two months later, in April, they released their first big international song, “New York Mining Dis- asterâ€. Since then many of their songs have been re- recorded by other artists. Together. “Words†and “Morning of My Life" have been re-recorded 200 times. To date. cover versions of BG songs have sold close to eight million copies for other artists. But it’s sad and almost tragic to see that the Bee Gees are one of the most successful songwriters in pop music, and yet they are hard- ly known at all by the pubâ€" lic. Probably the main rea- sons for this is that they sel- dom give interviews to the press and in their heyday of success, which was in the late 1960’s. they were over- shadowed by the publicity given to another English group called the Beatles. It’s ironical to think that the Bee Gees actually gained their international fame be- cause of the Beatles. Their first hit, “New York Mining Disaster". was bought by many North Americans un- der the assumption that it was a Beatle song. It wasn't till the song “To Love Some- bodyâ€. which came out in the summer of 1967, that people realized that the Bee Gees were not Beatle imi- tators. This song was not only a million seller but also a song which to date has been ire-recorded by more than 200 other singers. Their third song of the year, "Massachusetts", sold over five million copies and was one of the biggest hits of ROCK TALK By PAUL JONES The Bee Gees e yeah} 1d over: and was? kite nf the year. But the Bee Gees (a name derived from Barry Gibb's initials and later as- sumed by the public to mean “Brothers Gibb") have also had their share of problems. In the fall of 1967, they re- leased an album called “Bee Gees lst", which many reâ€" viewers compared with the best of the Beatles. The only upsetting factor was that the Beatles released an album at the same time. This album, “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", was regarded by many as the greatest rock album ever made and its presence hurt the sales and‘ popularity of the Bee Gee Album. (It seems that “Sgt. Pepper's" buried, saleswise, every other album that was released at the same time.) In early 1969, "Odessa", the first two-disc album to be released by the Bee Gees also encountered problems. Although reviewers rated this album as one of the best of the year, it never reached the sales potential that it should have. Un- fortunately, it was displaced by the Blood, Sweat and Tears‘ second album (which was heavily promoted by Columbia Records) and by the Beatles' "White" Album. Because of these reasons and others such as personality strains, the Bee Gees broke up in 1969. Barry Gibb went solo but then came back when his younger brother, Robin. left. For a year and a half the group was unsettled, but sur- prisingly enough their break- up gave them more popular- ity and publicity than they ever had before. It seemed that the music world nerv- ously awaited their reunion with the same anticipation that many fans of the Beatles do today. The reunion of Maurice, Barry and Robin Gibb in 1970 resulted with “Lonely Days". the finest single that the Bee Gees ever released. Since then they have had three success- ful singles in Canada. These are, “How Can You These are, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heartâ€, “My World", and “Run To Meâ€. They have also had four suc- cessful albums which are, “Trafalgar,†“To Whom It May Concern", “Life In A Tin Can", and “The Best Of The Bee Gees". They have a new single, “Mr. Natural" to be released in April along with a new album which has yet to be titled. ‘Success' sounds like a good title for this album.
