The site, 130 acres with trees, rocks, snow and lots of open space, is basic outn door On'tario. Nearby marsh, fields, creek, nivver. bush and rock outcropping are vital parts of the school's environ- mental science and outdoor education program. No trees have been cut down and m the spring the MM flowers and grasses grow as they al- ways have. Areas distunbed in the construction were 1%- seeded with wild flowers and grasses to restore them to their natural state. Seneca Courses Start In April In Markham Virtually every element in the building is related to a two-torey. glassroofed cen- tral area. Paved and planted with trees, is provides stu- dents and teachers alike with an informal meeting place, as well as ready access '00 the adjoining educauional and recreational facilifies, and is truly an oasis amid the ice and snow of an 0n- tario winter. Library Architect Wins Another Award Back in 1959 Richmond Hill's fine new public library building was opened. It had been designed by Ar- chitect Philip Brook of To- ronto and brought him the Massey Award in Archi- tecjure that year. The school, Central Algo- ma Secondary, which brought this recognition to the firm, is one of more than 20 it has designed. It is located on the Trans-Canada Highway. 40 md-les east of Sault Ste. Marie and replaces three small high schools serving a widely scattered population. No Double Tax Mobile Homes However, some municipali- ties decided the decision en- abled them to impose both taxes and a license fee to bring the total revenue from the property up to ruhe $240 being received for eedh mobile home on the proper- tY. A trend to double taxation on mobile homes will be hal- ted by the Ontario Govern- ment due to a move by Ed- ward Good, Liberal MLA for Waterloo North. Revenue Minister Arthur Meen assured Mr. Good, en- vironment critic for the Li- berals, that a policy of some municipalities of charging monthly license fees of up to $20 a month as well as municipal taxes for trailer park property was not mhe government's intention. 'Dhe Minister has insured the Legislature his depart- ment will look at the court decision and if necessary the government will amend the Assessment Act to prevent double taxation. This year his firm 01 Brook â€" Carrut‘heu‘s â€" Grierson -â€" Shaw are 'the first Canadian ardhi’ceabs to be awarded a special citation for school design from the American Institute of Archi- tects and the American As- sociation of School Adminis- trartors. The question was raised as the result of a recent court decision which ruled that for taxation purposes, mobile homes could ’be assessed as any other prOperty This de- cision reversed the long- standing pracflse of charging a monthly ldcense fee for sue}; property.
