A popular vote swing of 4.5% has given Canada once again a majority Libe- ral Government. In 1972, the Liberals re- ceived 39% of the votes and 109 seats in the House of Commons. Last week, 42.9% in votes produced 141 seats for them. The Progressive Conservatives increased their votes by .6% to 35.6%. but lost 10 of their 106 seats. The NDP fell Q.4% in popu- lar support receiving 15.6% of the national vote. This resulted in Socialist strength begin slashed from 31 to 16 seats in the House. Other parties â€" mainly the Saclal Credit. gave up 2.1% in votes. This reduced the So- cial Credit strength in the House from 15 to 11 mem- bers. V o t i n g preference in York Simcoe appears to have run contrary to the national trend. Here. the Progressive Conserva- tive vote went up while both the Liberal and NDP vote fell. I am most appreciative to the voters of York Simcoe for re-electing me as their Member of Parliament with an increased plurality. Station masters in many of our communities are being phased out. Wednes- day July 10, two days after the election, station masters in Maple, Aurora, Stouff- ville. Markham and Rich- mond Hill received word that the CNR wished to re- duce station office hours from the present 8 hours to one hour per day. The rail- road indicated they planned to hire local personnel for one hour a day in each com- munity to man the Stations from 7:00 am to 8:00 am. It is difficult to reconcile such downgrading of our stations with statements re- peatedly made by Ottawa that they plan to increase Contrary T0 National Trend Tory Vote Increased In Yk. The current CNR move appears to be another step in their approach to dis- courage passengers from using rail service. The week before our pre- sent commuter train service commenced operations, the ONR locked up all the wash- rooms in the Stations so they could not be used by the travelling public. At that time, a group of men came from Tomnto to put special locks on each of the washroms which have remained closed to this date. Before that, local station telephone numbers became unlisted leaving the local agent in the position where no one could contact him to receive information, I intend -to' draw these facts to the attention of the Canadian Transport Com- mission and request that they require the CNR to take steps to encourage rather than discourage pas- senger service, particularly in this area. Saturday July 13 Noreen and I were pleased to have a brief visit/with William and Dorothy Cutting who were celebrating their 45th Wedding Anniversary at their residence on Gorham Street in Newmarket. Some 70 people attended the re- ception which was hosted by their daughter, Marie Monkman of Richmond Hill and their son, Murray Cut- ting of 'Newmarket. The Cut- tings were married at the Dove residence on Conces- sion 4 of King._ My Action Office remains open in Newmarket at Suite 202. 92 Davis Drive, tele- phone 895-1287.
