Mr. Youmans joined Simp- sons-Sears in 1956 and has since been involved in the opening of seven new stores. During the past 18 years, he has held the positions of Personnel Manager, Credit and Customer Service Man- ager, Merchandise Manager, and Operating Superintend- ent. Mr. Youmans is mar- ried with three children and is now residing in Thornhill. He brings to the store a great deal of experience and is looking forward to serv- ing the community. In “Infant Toronto" by John Andoc, the following is recorded: On a trip back from Pennsylvania in 1793 Munshaw assisted Berczy in bringing his settlers to Mark- ham. “The Sleigh road on Yonge North of Thornhill is referred to as ‘the road to Simpsons-Sears Ltd. Bolsar came with his wife and five children and subâ€" sequently had five more, born in the area of Rich- mond Hill. Mr. Taylor quotes Mary O'Brien's Journal as recording that Munshaw had 43 grandchildren in 1830 and reports that he himself had found almost 60. Mr. Taylor reported that according to Richmond Hill's local historian, William Har- rison who wrote a series of historical articles for "The Liberal" in 1888-89) Bolsar Munshaw came to lot 51, Concession 1 Vaughan Town- ship in 1792. from Pennsyl- vania, the year Lieutenant- Governor John Graves Simcoe advertised in the Pennsylvania papers for im- migrants. IThis lot is' the 200 acres immediately north of the Elgin Mills Sideroad on the west side of Yonge Street and was the first to be settled in this area.) This prompted William Taylor of Hilldale Road, Aurora, to offer his congra- tulations to council for re- membering early citizens. He was particularly interes- ted in the name Munshaw since his wife is the great- great-great-granddaughter of Bolsar Munshaw, Richmond Hill‘s first settler. Captain James Fulton married Elizabeth and Caroline Fulton mar- ried John Munshaw. One daughter married Nicholas Miller’s son Nathan, and a brother married ‘Nathan's sister. Sarah married Thomas Morgan of Thornhill and a granddaughter married a One son, Aaaron, who lived on the original lot north of the Elgin in 1837, was a rebel and went to the States with William Lyon Mackenzie. He later was the first settler and hotelkeeper at Flesherton, Ontario. The Munshaw sons owned Lot 35, Concession 1 Markham until 1920, Lot 27, Concession 1 Vaughan from 1815 to 1920; Lot 37, Con- cession 1 Markham until the 1870‘s: Lot 22. Concession 3 for a while; Lot 44, Con- cession 1 Vaughan 1815 to 1900. Later this latter lot was owned by Minnie Mun- shaw’s husband, Joe Atkin- son, One son owned Lot 24, Concession 1 North York, east side, from 1811 to about 1900. They also owned farms in King and Bowman- ville. Bolsar was constable fox: part of Markham and all of Vaughan at one time. and at least three of his sons were members of Captain Fulton’s light cavalry in the War of 1812. In 1794, when Nicholas Miller settled on lot 34, Concession 1 Markham, and heard from the Indians of another white man farther north. he asked him (Mun- shaw) to settle on Lot 35, Mr. Taylor noted that the Munshaw farm lane there is now called Ruggles. Unfortunately the resi- dents of Maple Avenue op- posed the change of name of their street and it will not take place Mr. Taylor thought it would be more fitting if a street on land owned by the Munshaws at one time commemorated Richmond Hill's first settler. The only three of these which lie within the town‘s present boundaries are Lot 5], Con- cession 1 Vaughan Town- ship (immediately north of Elgin Mills Sideroad) and Lot 44 Concession 1 Vaug- han, the southern ZOO-acres of the 400-acres just .south of Vaughan Road. where the Civic Centre will be located, and Lot 37. Concession 1 Markham, part of the Jail Farm property. Although there is no mo- nument to be found of B01- sar Munshaw, he was buried in Richmond Hill Presbyte- rian Cemetery as were most of his sons and daughters for whom there are stones. A few of the families who married descendants of B01- sar are: Soules, Hoshel, Trench, Ireland. Harvey, Molloy, Fullerton, Devins, Carleton, Williams, Burr, Troop, Wellman, Carman, Meek, Welsh and Miles. Their descendants are still living in Toronto, and all over York County as well as across Canada and in many states below the bord- er.
