Durham Region Approves Big Pipe The province's proposal to build a giant sewage pipe to serve the Regions of Durham and York as well as the pro- posed Pickering Airport and satellite city, is making pro- gress, inch by inch. Some weeks ago York Regional Council approved it in prln- ciple at a proposed 49c for every 1,000 gallons of effltfo ent it sends down the pipe. Durham Regional Council. it was reported last Week, has also approved the scheme in principal at the same rate. Now we have our big mall open. I was fascinated last Thursday morning watching all the people walking to it. At one point it looked like a baby stroller parade. We waked over in the evening and enjoyed seeing all the new shiny stores and most of all we enjoyed watching the hundreds of people. Many were shopping for bargains, but many were just looking and having a pleasant even- ing out. I just wonder how they found their cars when it came to go home. The payment would be used to pay for construction, mortgaglng and maintenance costs over 40 years. The big pipe would phase out the package treatment plants now in use on the up- per reaches of the rivers flowing into Lake Ontario from this area and would car- ry all effluent to a sophistica- ted massive treatment plant on that body of water. I hope I didn't miss any calls from you last week. We were away for a few days to Lake Joseph. We stayed at the Lake Joseph Hotel where the meals are something to remember. Hughie is a ter- rific chef. His menu is not large. but every dinner is a specialty and would compare with the best in the city. Hillcrest I was talking to one of the Brownie leaders this week and she said they are now getting ready for the meetings which will start in mid-September. There are a number of Brownie packs in the Richvale area and some of them are short of leaders. If you could help in any way please call Elaine Hobbs at 889-2897 or (Audrey Hilton at 884-7179. This would be a very rewarding way to spend a little time each week. Holiday A report of the environ- mental hearing board, which has been considering the whole project. called the Central York-Pickering Areal Servicing Scheme, has been submitted to the Minister, 11 is reported, but has not bee! made public as yet. The way would now seen to be open for the provlslox of temporary services througl Metro. Small Trucks Don't Need Owners' Names Brownies Owners of small trucks will no longer be required to have their names printed on the side of their vehicles, according to an amendment to the Highway Traffic Act announced recently.
