Yes I know some were under 40 but . . .i 10h never mind) John Marais ran the event with his uSual competance and. .everyone had' a thoroughly‘ ‘ good time. John also fixed the handi- caps, and though there were hoots of derision and cries of disbelief when these were announced, he was almost 100% vindicated by the closeness of the games. I can only think of one handi- cap that might have beenI just a little off. Just one in over 20, and at that only maybe. Heck! That's a pretty goodrecord y0u must admit. There are not many of us who could have work- ed things that well. .And let‘s face it, he didn't have all that much time in which to fix it. Handicapping isn't a science, it's an art, and a difficult one when you have to rate people you haven’t even heard of, that alone seen play. ‘ Naturally, John didn‘t, want some unknown dark, horse wiping everyone off the courts by virtue of too‘ high a handicap. And tol John's credit that didn't‘, happen. So. by and large.l all things considered, honi‘ soit qui mal y pense andl all that load of old cob‘l blers, John should be con-i gratulated. , He should also be con-, gratulated for winning the‘, event with Anna McKeei over Sam Malcolmson and. Joy August who fought heroically but in vain against towering odds. The “Wooden Spoon" was: won by Wes and Caroli Draper who beat Didi and‘ Marylou you know who, in a play-off. This part of the tournament was a little, vague in concept and result-l ed in both pairs fighting tooth and nail to win in, order to avoid being award- ed the trophy, only to be‘, fooled in the end. i While all this was going on, Bob McKee and helpers had prepared the main event of the day â€"â€" the bar-' becue. Although the Rich- mond Hill Fire Department were twice called to the, scene of the blaze there,‘ really was no cause forg alarm, and at no time was, the pavilion in any real dang ger. That's more than canl be said for the hamburgerslI and hot-dogs some of which‘ were almost totally destroy-i ed. There was a grill mis- sing from one of the bar-1 becues, and Phil August, who had heard about those1 all-metal racquets fmm aI Thornhill aquaintance of‘ his, thought that . . . welll anyone can make a mistakel There was no need for that.‘ chap to make all that fussl Crying and all that. $60 he said. What's more he wasn't even a member. He just popped in to use the wash- room on his way to May- fair, and only put his rac- quet down for,a moment. Jack Brodrick then asked him to pay a $1 guest fee or he'd throw 'him out. ICTA LADIES LEAGUE A luncheon meeting of the captains and division chairmen was held at R’HTC. The ladies have a flourish- ing league which is now divided into three divisions of six teams each, with the prospect of at least another 4 teams joining next sea- son. The winners this year were: East Division â€"â€" Richmond Hill Centre Division â€"â€" Three Valleys Yellow West Division â€"- ; Credit Valley At the conclusion of the meeting it was decfded to hold a Veteran Ladies Doubles Tournament on September 18 at Mayfair Valley. So the moment of truth has arrived says Mon- ica Vermeulen, director of the ladies league. Big mis- take Monica. You should have made it 39. TEAM RESULTS The majors seem to have found out what it's all about these days and won yet again August 20 away at Oshawa 4-2. What's more the ‘C' team won by the same score at home against Markham two nights later and thereby lifted them- selves out of last place. One small step for mankind but one giant step for the ‘0 team. BERMUDA STAKES It seems I was in error last week in naming Brian Stainer and Monica Ver- meule as our representa- tives. Dennis Stainer claims that not only did he and Eleanor Lloyd challenge them, but they beat them too. at It 1 Finally a word {If con- gratulation to Margaret Lade for her fine appre- ciation of who's really who in Richmond Hill. It wasn't so much that she mentioned me first in her "It's ap- pening in the Hill" column, but that she put Dennis Stainer last. Boy did that ever feel good.
