Participation was the key- note Saturday in the boys and girls‘ singles. The luds themselves helped in organ- izing, uvmpiring, and all the other jobs that help to make a successful day. Every game had an umpire. How about that- In the 12 year and under event, a new category this year, we had Ross Walton pitted against Paul Beck who has had quite a number of successes this year. This was no exception, and Paul took another trophy home for Mum to clean. He must be catching up to John and June pretty rapidly. Ther giris' eâ€"veni was not completed and Vicky Robin- to see some perpetuity in the club as names like Beck, Marais, Malcolmson, Vermeâ€" ulen, Lennon, etc. were sprinkled throughout the draw. In fact, the names were so like them that they were indistinguishable. come to think of it. However the newer names were also mak- ing their mark. Eric Hand- bury's two boys, John and Julian for instance. John gave eventual winner Maik Girdler a good match in the quarter-ï¬nals, and Julian played a fine game against Richard Vermeulen in the semis only to lose in tne third set as Richard came from behind. Sneaky, theen Vermeulens. Mark Girdler's training and experience was in evidence in the final where he retained his title against the hard hitting Richard Vermeulen. Seniors and parents tumâ€" ed out to support the event and were not disappointed one whit. It was rather nice September is tournament month and all the serious events are held during these fall weekends. For some it is a traumatic experience as they will be buying a can of new balls for the first time this year. The first events were held last weekend. On Saturday it was the juniors who held sway and the sen- iors took over on Sunday. Good tennis was the order of both days. the main dif- ference in the play being the speed. The juniors were faster. Junior Singles Close to 100 artists and craftsmen will be setting up spaces to exhibit their wares at Seneca College’s fall festival of arts, crafts and antiques from 10 am to 6 pm Sunday. The missing flaming “S†of Seneca is being drawn in the picture above by students (left to right) Jackie Kervoelen of Stoney Point and Corry SUNDAY FOR FURTHER INFORMATION: 884-6651 FRIDAY SATURDAY 8 :30 THURSDAY 12 - 1 WEDNESDAY TUESDAY MONDAY Recreational Swimming < V~ . This weekend Saturday and Sunday, September 14 and 15, the ladies' and Mens' singles, Entries must be In by 6 pm Thursday and entry fee is $1 and one unopened can of ILTA approved balls. There were some long and hard-fought battles in this event and I do believe there were a fair few out on court who were actually trying. Vicky Robinson gallantly carried her father through a couple of rounds, but it was just one of those days for Frank. On one occasion he mistook a bee for the ball, missed it, but not vice ver'a. Joan Freeman actually turn- ed up, and she and I romp- ed through the first round without losing a game. Tnc next two rounds were a little harder as we didn't have another bye, and in the third round we met a pair that kept hitting the ball over the net, and against those sort of filthy tactics I'm helpless. John Marais realising that discretion is the better part of valour. feigned an injury and lost in the first round in order to cream all the on- position in the consolation. All in all, a fine weekend, and credit to those who helped to run it. Coming Events That same couple, Peter Wenzel and Lily Torisawa, contended one semi-final Becks, John and June. while Phil and Joy August took on Brian Stainer and Monica Vermeulen in the other. That set up a final between Peter and Lily, and Phil and Joy, a stirring three setter in which the Augusts emerged triumphant. The consolation events were combined boys and girls (how about that for dar- ing. Ron?) and Peter Mal- colmson took the big kids title and Andre Marais the little kids one. Senior Mixed Doubles son will be defending her title later against Dierdre Lennon who incidentally had to play very well to beat Sandra MacMillan in the semi-final. The same Sandra made no mistake in the girls 12 year5,and under event where she beat Brenda Lennon in the final. LET'S PLAY TENNIS Richmond Hill Tennis Club Vertelman of Nobeton. As added attractions there will be guided tours of the visual arts centre and Eaton hall, demonstrations and excursions of various types around the 696 estate on Dufferin Street north of King Sideroad.
