Donald Deacon MLA. York Centre says he supported the provincial government in the recent Toronto transit crisis although he opposes the principle of the action taken. The local legislator says it's time for a full revision of provincial labor legisla- tion. He suggests considera- tion of Germany's system of having union representatives on boards of directors and the US. Tennessee Valley Authority’s final offer selec- tion system. 8 THE LIBERAL, Richmond Hill, Ontario, Wednesday, Sept. 11, 1974 Deacon Explains Position He Took On Transit Strike § u ., -.v._.v “Both of these principles run counter to many tradit- ional ideas that labor and management must be protag- onists and remain at opposite poles." says the MLA from Unionville. SUPPORTED BILL On the August 30 day of the vote in a specially con- vened Legislature. Deacon said in a press communique he supported Bill 119 which in effect ordered the transit workers back to their jobs and put the dispute to bind- ing compulsory arbitration. "Although I am complete- ly opposed to the principle of forced arbitration. the dis- ruption caused by the strike became intolerable and after three weeks of on-and-off bargaining, no end was in sight. I therefore voted for the bill," he said. Deacon says the best way to revise the provincial labor code is to organize a com- mittee consisting of members of the Legislature and also representatives of union and management. to study the labor problems we now re- peatedly encounter and make recommendations in a report before the end of the year. Then a new labor code could be enacted in the spring legislative session. He also invited suggestions and ideas from the public about ways to reduce the causes of la- bor strife. lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll“l\\\ll\l\lllll\l\\lm Maybe the thief Just wanted to get his fence up before the first snow- ‘mobller arrived on the scene. um““mum\mmumum\munuuuunuunmuunmnunm Seneca Housing Need Urgent In York Among the hardest hit by the housing- shortage are students. Seneca College. with a campus in the Re- gion of York and four in North York. is sending out urgent appeals for residen- tial accommodation. Although designed pri- marily to serve its own com- munity. Seneca draws stud- ents from all over Ontario, Canada and the world. And provincial regulations do not permit construction of residences by community colleges. these students have to depend on living quar- ters available off campus. All types of accommoda- tion are needed, ranging from apartments to rooming houses and vacant rooms in private homes and some- times to arrangements where the student assists with babysitting and h0usework. The five Seneca campuses are located at Woodbine and Finch Avenues, at Sheppard Avenue and Yonge Street, at Leslie and Sheppard Avenues â€" all in Willow- dale â€" at Lawrence Avenue and Jane Street in Downs- view. and on Dufferln Street north of King Side- road in York.
