An organization meeting two weeks back. called by Bob Thompson. drew interest from a large number of young girls who expressed assurances that a basketball league was feasible. Local high school stars such as Joy Gwillam and Jane Shorten will be partlci~ pating and a close league competition is expected. First game starts off at 7:00 pm and the second match will follow at 8:00 pm. Team Captains Leslie Rogers. Cheryl Paxton, Jane Shorten and Marnee Buckles will lead squads onto the church gym floor each Tues- day night in competition for the basketball champion~ ships of the ‘Hill'. High School aged girls were invited to compete, and all teams were quickly filled with players. Future growth of the league will depend on the success of this year’s venture. All games will be played at the Richmond Hill United Church gym on Centre Street. Teenaged girls basketball jumped off the mark this week with the formation of a four-team league at Rich- mond Hill United Church. Winning pitcher was Harold DeGeer who struck out 13 batters. The management 6f Jen- kins has protested it has not been established that the York Simcoe League is of a President Simpkins claims Lennevllle has participated in nine games in this other league and has documented proof to back up his state- ment, This would make him ineligible for the industrial league. HIGH CALIBRE This interpretation is bas- ed on the premise that the York Simcoe loop is a high- er class calibre. The consti tution states that persons may plan no more than three games in a higher cal- ibre classification. The controversy thickens with League President Simp- kins offering another inter- pretation of the industrial league‘s constitution as the main reason for Lenne- ville‘s suspension. Reports have it that other members of the Richmond Hill league are participating or have participated in the York Simcoe league this year, but the only action in- itiated was against Lenne- ville. Lenneville was formerly employed with Rat‘cliff‘s of Richmond Hill and played part - *ime with that comâ€" pany's team which entered the constituted York Simcoe League this season. Crux of the matter appears to be wait was described as an “unwritten clause" (Ed. Note. What's that?) in the in- dustrial league's constitution which indicates that a player “shall not participate in any other league." RULE EXCEPTION The excepion is that a player' will be allowed to play for company and church ball teams in the case where the company operates the league or is uncons-tituted. Lenneville was suspended following a special meeting called by League President Fred Simpkins to discuss his eligibility with the Jenkins team. The recent suspension of Jenkins Garden Supplies’ star hurler John “Big Blue” has resulted in as much off- the-di-amond action in the Richmond Hill Industrial Softball League as on it. Coming in the midst of playoffs. the suspension has threatened to turn the league upside down. Jenkins’ Hurler Suspended Barbour says the Jenkins team is still maintaining that the calibre of ball in the York Simcoe League has not been sufficiently established. higher calibre than the Rich- mond Hill Industrial League. Their protest was entered fol- lowing the playing of their last game in which they 103t a 5-4 decision tq Richmond Hill Auto Body in the second of their best-of-three Playâ€" off series. HYPOCRISY ' “For the Richmond Hill league to consider itself as a calibre of ball lower than intermediate is hypocrisy. If not, they have a Special rea- son for suspending a bril- liant young ball player who missed no games with his club thlS season. He claims the original “league ruling" was put there to assure that play- ers of an obviouslyAfsuperigr A further problem evolves around the fact the Rich- mond Hull League has no of- ficial classification with the OASA and therefore has no official means of deciding just how good or how bad their calibre of players are in comparison.
