King Township Mayor Margaret Britnell explained that residents along the road had balked at this "and rightfully so because that would mean the right- of-way would run through porches and even kitchens in some areas." For the past few years the municipality has main- tained the dirt-surfaced roads and for almost as long has been attempting to get provincial road subsidies for their upkeep. No luck. QUESTION OF WIDTH The crux of the problem has been the width of the roads with a 66-foot right-of- way required before a sub- sidy would even be con- sidered. The municipality would also have to officially assume their roads. The soap opera tinged Pumphouse Road and Blind- man Road saga entered yet another phase at King Town- ship Council Monday night of last week. Both roads are privately owned and run along the water and serve as service routes for farmers taking their produce to Bradford. It's the council's feeling that a 40-foot riught-of-way be ample but ensuing com- munications with Ministry of Transportation and Com- munications officials proved futile. "They just wouldn't go for it". said Mrs. Britnell. 60 FEET OR LESS A change of heart was apparent Monday night when another government letter arrived suggesting that "the municipality should attempt to obtain a 66-foot right-of- way, but if because of cir- cumstances such as buildings too close to the roadway, a less“ width would be acceptable." “I don't think they're too sure ' what they want thems ies," observed Coun- cillor Sn Kunlski. SOME DROWNINGS Councillor Jack Van Luyk noted the roads are "dan- gerous to the motoring pub- lic in the winter and we should do something to make them safer. I‘ve seen a large truck upset there by the canal and slide right onto the ice in the winter-time. People have drowned there in the past." in the arena will have to move when the ice goes back in and is looking for winter quarters. Summer Treatment Of King Roads Said Hurting Vegetables Members of King Town- ship Council were informed Monday night of last week that the calcium was caus- ing damage to the crops as far as 200 yards in from the roads. The information came by way of a letter from Mathew Valk, a specialist with the provincial ministry of agri- culture and food. SUMMER CULPRIT Valk said it was thought at first the damage was be- ing caused by salt run-off from the roads which are treated in the winter time to cut the ice and snow. Further investigation re- vealed the real bugaboo is the summer treatment. top quiz and also for the top essay. NEED TIME King Township Mayor Margaret Britneli expressed her concern, noting that the dust-problem is being con- sidered. It was decided to con- sider the problem at a future committee meeting. "We’re trying to handle the road problem in veget- able growing areas as best we cam†she said. “This can be accomplished by applying a hard~top surface consisting of crushed stones and tar. But it all takes time." OTHER COUNCILLORS Councillor Murray Shear- down agreed it was a finan- cial problem “in getting to all the roads at once with the cost of asphalt having risen from $7.83 to $13.40 a ton." She added that the ‘road program was continuing from year to year on a priority basis.
