Desperation gamble backfires Hill Midgets lose to Aurora 5-3 A last second desperation gamble by the Richmond Hill Legion Midget squad backfired Sunday when Barrie scored on an empty net to win by 5-3. It was that kind of a week for the local AA team who could only manage one out of a possible six points in league play after opening the season with impressive wins. They got that one point Tuesday of last week in a 2-2 tie with Thornhill at Thornhill Community Centre. They went on to get blanked 3-0 by Barrie Saturday in Barrie. Sunday‘s game in Rich- mond Hill against the same Barrie squad was a free- wheeling affair with the locals coming up with a much more impressive performance over the previous contest in Barrie. Barrie opened the scoring in the first period but Richs mond Hill tied it at 4:03 on a goal by Doug Hodgson assisted by Danny Jones. Barry moved into a two goal lead before Mike Gallaugher of the Legion narrowed it to 3â€"2 at 6:54 from Hodgson. Score equalizer Richmond Hill scored the equalizer at 13:46 on a pretty effort engineered by Gallaugher. Gallaugher rushed in on the Barrie defence and left a perfect drop-pass for Mike Ham who blasted it home using Gallaugher as the screen all the way. The persistent Barrie squad went ahead again at 1:090f the third period. Both the Barrie goalie and Ben Bourget came up with sparkling saves the rest of the way as they did throughout the game. The Legion picked up a penalty with 2:38 remaining ,and this cooled their drive to tie the game. Then came another one to Goalie Bourget which upset the Legion management. In the ensuing two minutes the Legion boys managed to hang on despite a concerted effort by Barrie to score the assurance marker. Move backfires There was 31 seconds remaining when Richmond Hill returned to full strength and they were able to get the face-off in the Barrie end. Bourget was pulled in favor of the extra attacker but things didn‘t work out ac~ cording to plan. Barrie got possession of the puck at the blueline and popped it into the yawning Richmond Hill net with five seconds remaining. Last week's 2-2 tie with Thornhill saw the latter team get off to a fast twoâ€" goal start in the first five minutes of play. Richmond Hill recovered and tied the game within a three-minute period as first Ham counted assist by Atoms Tie Barrie 3â€"3 _ in the first game of league play for the Atoms in the York Simcoe League they hosted a good skating Barrie club and came up with a well earned 3â€"3 tie. The boys are playing well for this early in the season. They kept digging and came from behind to gain the tie with Gary Sutherland hitting for two quick goals and Brian Hull scoring one with a great second effort. Goalies Don F‘awcett and Steve Ritchie shared the goaltending duty and both came up with some fine ., saves. That ended the scoring but the Legion rattled the op_- position post three or four times but just couldn‘t put it in The Legion's Randy Martin had the misfortune to stop a stick in the game and came out of it minus a tooth and with stitches in- side his mouth. Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Barrie saw the Legion run into an almost endless string of penalties. Despite this the game was a mild affair with the game officials calling everything. The long parade of penalties rattled the Legion and they could never get a cohesive attack going and were fortunate that Barrie only got three goals. Richmond Hill Goalie Mike Doyle was particularly brilliant in the third period making 17 saves. a few of them that ranked in the unbelievable class. Rams shoot, shoot, but no score as Markham squeaks out 3-2 win The Provincial Junior A loop is full of future NHL goalies. They all look great. At least when they play the Richmond Hill Rams who don‘t seem able to even find a decent ocean around to fill. It was the same old story Tuesday night as the Rams outshot Markham Waxers 34-11; but came out the losers by a 3-2 margin. Not even a last few seconds takeâ€"the-goalie out desperation ploy worked for a gowingly frustrated Rich- mond llill Ram Coach Karl lirimblccombe. He was clearly observed shaking his head in sheer chagrin in the corridors of the Richmond Hill Arena seconds after the game. From Karl: No comment. The Rams trailed 1H until the 3:14 minute mark of the final 20 minutes when Rick Febbo finally blasted a slap shot in from about four feet out after Markham‘s Goalie Jim Baxter had pulled off a wower of a stop on a blazer by Ben Pedcrsen. Minor Bantams Defeat Barrie The Minor Bantam ‘A‘ Rams travelled to Barrie Saturday to rekindle the old rivalry between the two towns. The Hillers opened the scoring on a goal by Dave Plaxton assisted by Peter Morley and widened their lead to two goals when Gerry Lawlor scored on 3 Scott Bartlett pass. Barrie scored with 33 seconds remaining in the opening period to close within one .goal. Jeff Joslin scored what proved to be the winner when he stepped over the Barrie blue line and drilled a slapshot past the Barrie goalie.
