Thornhill’s Gula Markham Town trustee hopeful Walter Gula Markham SChools hopeful Walter Gula, 31, a resident of Thomhill for three years, is seeking election to one of the three Markham seats on the York County Board of Education December 2. As a teacher in North York for 7V2 years at the secondary level, Gula is deeply con- cerned about our educational system. He feels many problems exist and places the blame for these squarely on the shoulders of the present trustees. What convinced him he should run was the results of a test authorized by the York County Board of Education which revealed students in grades 2, 4, 6 and 8 scored well below the national average with regard to basic skills in mathematics and spelling. These results, Gula says, indicate students of seven years ago scored better. Nothing now “Yet it was the general opinion of the trustees that nothing should be done now. They felt they should wait and see what happens in ‘a year or two‘. I just couldn‘t believe it!“ he says. “They were faced with a problem â€" they had proof a problem existed and they effectively ignored it. I don’t know how important the present trustees feel public school is, but as far as I am concerned it is the most important level in the entire educational system,“ he said. “If our children are to get a proper education, they need devoted, wellqualified teachers and an optimum learning environment. However. contacts with top notch teachers employed by other boards have shown they would not seriously consider teaching in York County. “Other fine teachers at December 2nd, 1974 VOTING CERTIFICATES If you are a Canadian citizen or other British subject, 18 years of age or on or before polling day will attain the age of 18 years and resided in the Town of Vaughan between September 3rd and October 8th, 1974, or, having these qualifications, were a non-resident owner or tenant, or the spouse of a non-resident owner or tenant and your name was omitted from the List of Electors, you may PERSONALLY obtain a Certificate to Vote at the Town Clerk’s Office, 2141 Major Mackenzie Drive, Maple, between 8:30 o‘clock AM. and 4:30 o‘clock P.M., Monday to Friday. Jackman, Clerk Nmmmhpr 90th 1974, 832-2281 November 20th, 1974 TOWN OF VAUGHAN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS present working in York County are trying to find positions with other boards. This situation has developed over the last few years as a result of deteriorating board-teacher relations. The travesty that occurred last January only served to worsen matters. “We cannot allow another board of trustees to accept teachers’ resignations and have our children miss six weeks of valuable study at the high school level. The situation was intolerable. “Our students definitely suffered, especially those who went on to university this year,†Gula continued. Gula objectives His objectives are: a board of trustees who will not only solicit advice of parents but will seriously consider it and act ac- cordingly. Proper spending of our educational dollar to create the best possible learning situation for our children. Better planning to remove or at least alleviate over- crowding of schools in newly-developed areas. Up-to-date facilities with thoroughly competent teachers who know how to make maximum use of them; and introduction of junior kindergartens.
