That part was the discussion over whether or not Pottageville Swamp should be called Pot- tageville Marsh. King Township Council was literally “swamped” by one part of its agenda Monday night of last week during its last meeting of the year. King council swamped again Councillor Stan Kuniski thought the name marsh had a nicer ring to it than swamp. Mayor Margaret Britnell observed that a swamp contained a “lot of living things. The word swamp is certainly not a derogatory term.” she said. Councillor Ben Rough, who was making his last official appearance as a councillor, wondered what The 1975 inaugural meeting of the York Region Roman Catholic School board will be held January 7 at Our Lady Queen of the World Church on Bayview Avenue. Grips his pipe This caused Councillor Jack Van Luyk, a member of that ward for a number of years, to grip his pipe somewhat convulsiver and gasp. But he said nothing. Mayor Britnell then asked just “what is the difference between a swamp and a marsh?" “Malignancy,” comm ented Councillor Rough. Another member suggested a “marsh moves and a swamp doesn’t”. “Look it hp in the die tionary,” continued Mr Rough. Puffs his pipe Councillor Van Luyk had the definitive answer. Rev. Swamp sale The subject came up as council considered a letter from the South Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority requesting the return of the $25 submitted as an option to purchase the Pottageville Swamp as the transaction couldn’t be completed in 1974. Council approved the request. The authority will resubmit the money in 1975 if the sale can be finalized during the year on Dunlop Street, but space there is very limited. Parking there also poses a problem. A more northern location was considered but the majority of trustees favored Richmond Hill as it is the centre of the largest population. 1973 $ 41,404,831 850,004,342 114,966,497 768,745,397 685,944,844 164,059,498 73,070,702 6,484,125 6,902,247 2.24 2.39 (Photo by Daw) Maple seniors sing and laugh for Christmas PLAYTEX JANUARY SALE By Louise Couper At a Christmas program for the Maple senior citizens last week, there were readings, recitations, carols, contests and a humourous skit by two local ministers. This was a return performance for Stanley Snowden, minister of Maple United Church and George French of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. They presefited a skit about two character farmers, Ike McSweeney and Abe Perkins, preparing fdr their own Christmas. Both men are good actors and the audience enjoyed their good-natured kidding immensely. Many said they hope the ministers will return. Margaret Jackson read two amusing old newspaper clippings and Pearl Brown recited a modern version of The Night Before Christmas. Contests were organized by Jean Downing and Louise Cooper. Mrs. Downing also read from the ever- popular Ideals publication and lead the carol sing, while Eveline Keffer played the piano. A bus-load of Vaughan seniors travelled to Simcoe for a tour of the Christmas Panorama, a display of some sixty light units â€" Santas, Christmas trees, poinsettias, crosses, an open Bible and even a Union Jack in lights. The light show was begun in 1958 with only six units but with the ex- pansion it has become a major tourist attraction. Over half a million people have visited it to date, it is estimated. As well as the people from Maple, there were others from King City, Rich- mond Hill, Kleinburg and Woodbridge. While the seniors have been having fun, they have not forgotten their friends who have not been well enough to join them, including Roly Keffer and Flossie Puterbaugh.
