Rabies warning Richvaleâ€" Langstaff Eight rabid foxes in three weeks between Highway 7 and Camille Road and between Bathurst and Bayview, which area contains the largest part of Richmond Hill’s urban population, have been at- tended to by his staff in the last three months, Canine Control Officer James Ryan reports. Friday he answered three calls about rabid foxes by early afternoon. Pet protection He urrges all pet owners to protect their animals against a chance meeting with a rabid wild animal by having them vaccinated and by keeping them under close control. He also urges parents to instruct their children not to pet or handle any animals other than their own pets and not them if they are acting strangely. Any person seeing any fox in the daylight is advised to telephone the police im- mediately and give its location, since this is not usual conduct for a wild fox and could be an indication it is suffering from advanced rabies. ‘ Stoufiville water tests asked weekly Residents on six properties around the York Sanitation landfill site on Highway 48 in Whitchurch- Stouffville Town are so concerned about the possibility of water con- tamination that town council has asked the Ministry of Health to make weekly water tests on these properties. There is no firm indication water in wells neighboring on the controversial site is contaminated, although one family has complained of “always being sick”. said Mayor Gordon Radcliff in an interview. “But we thought we had better take some safeguards just in case". The town passed a bylaw earlier this year banning garbage dumping within its limits after April 1 of next year. York Sanitation, however, has an application before the Environmental Board to expand its operations on the Highway 48 site. A petition signed by 2,500 residents demanding closing of the dump has been presented to the board but will not be dealt with until the board reconvenes January 6. Hearings began about mid-November and con- tinued for four weeks, with the board sitting about two days a week to consider the application for expansion of the landfill area. NEWMARKET: A rink skipped by Elsie Evans will represent York in the provincial bonspiel in January which will be held in Scarboro.
