Bowlers are matched in head on competition, but when you lose two games you are out of the com- petition. Yours truly made it to the finals only to be defeated by John Pappas of Scar- borough. John won $800 for first and second place money of $400 made defeat easier to take. INSTRUCTIONAL TIP Lane Conditions a Last week I spoke of fast and slow lanes. Other variables in conditions are the pins. A four ounce tolerance is allowed in the pins. a set of heavy pins might add up to a difference of over one pound. The rubbers around the belly of the pin can vary from soft to hard. The climate can change pin fall due to temperature or humidity change. In the mens division 32 bowlers qualified for the double knock out format. Local zone bowlers qualifying were Tom Butler from Barrie, Vic Tugwell and Tom Horton from Newmarket and Ian Cameron of Richmond Hill. But there is one thing that should remain constant. and that is a bowlers delivery. Once the bowler has achieved perfection in his delivery he should not vary it. But he must change other factors of his game as it becomes necessary. The Legionnaires just couldn't get untracked against their old nemesis, Barrie. January 4. Despite carrying the play to Barrie for the better part of the game they came up with tw0 very bad defensive lapses in the first period by leaving an attacker uncovered in front of Mike Doyle who made the initial save on both plays, but couldn‘t recover in time to block the return shots. But Caesars Palace and Bill Best Tire Sales received the most points, as both totalled 19 pts. In the womens division 16 women qualified for the double knock out round. Emerging the winner with no losses was Sue Lougheed of Hamilton. The Legion‘s offensive players were also at fault on many plays around the Barrie net â€"â€" by not following the play in to the net mouth to pick up rebounds and loose pucks. The game produced a lot of good skating, but ’Barrie, proving to be the op- portunists, they are known to be, made the effort pay off in a 3-1 win. Team Standings find Bill Best Tire Sales in top spot with 38 pts. followed by Caesars Palace 32, 300 Club 31, W&P Motors 23, Don Mills Truck Sales 19, Anderson Heating 18, Creative Decor 18 and Barfoots Sheet Metal 13. After coming off a 10-1 victory Saturday in the opening game of the Tiger Town Tournament in Hamilton the Hillers could not keep up the pace and fell prey to an eager squad from London, who outhustled the Travelways team at every turn. Dino Capotosto played a good game in the Richmond Hill nets, letting in only one of 12 shots. Nigro got the first goal of the final period, Clark and Girard helping. Peden put it past Owen Sound’s Paul Hooey and Phil Wood made it 9-1, Norman assisting. With 10 seconds left in the game, Greg Walton make it 10 for Travelways. Peden put Travelways back into the game less than a minute later as he took a pass from Legere and made no mistake. London came right back and scored an easy goal which took the wind out of the Travelways sails. Although Nigro scored again to put the Hill team back in the picture, they just couldn‘t get themselves going again. With three minutes left in the game and London leading 5~3 Travelways went into a deep sleep after they had been dozing all game and allowed London two more gift goals assist on the play. Tim Hart got the second one on a breakaway as he was handed the puck at his own blue line by a Hill defen- ceman and skated in alone on Steve Shadoff who had little or no chance on the play. In three previous meetings, Travelways have eaten Barrie for breakfast; They have outscored them 22-6. With a record like that one wonders what happened Thursday night when Barrie registered a 3-2 win. With Barrie leading 1-0 on a goal by Graham Griffen in the first period Travelways ran into a couple of foolish penalties in the second. While the Hill team was two men short John Cox made it 2-0 as he took a pass from Murray Hadley and made Travelways were without the services of Phil Wood with a back ailment and Blair Lewis who has been ill with the flu the past week played very sparingly, but this is not enough to excuse the team for a very lacklustre effort the past couple of games. This game once again proved that you can't win games when you're in the penalty box all the time. Barrie scored two of their three goals while they en- joyed a man advantage. With 10 minutes left in the game Travelways made a futile attempt to get back in the running as Peden broke in alone after Nigro had won the face-off at the Barrie blue line and beat Paul Jackson with a hard shot to the top corner of the net. Gropp scored Travelways' second and final goal with Nigro again getting the assist. In a must game for the Bantams they came through with a big 4-3 win over a Thornhill team who had not been defeated in their 12 previous starts. The goaltending of Capotosto managed to keep the Hill team in the game until they found their scoring punch. With Travelways leading 4-3 late in the third period Dino stopped a Thornhill player as he broke in all alone. That save preserved the much- needed win. Travelways not only won the game they also won the fight as Legere won a decision over Buchan early in the third period. the left wing. As he skated around the Thornhill defence he laid a perfect pass over to Garry Gentry who slid the puck under Davidson. Thornhill came back in the second to tie the score as Bell beat Capotosto with a quick shot. Less than a minute later Nigro took a pass from Peden and shifted around the Tharnhill defence to go in alone to score a picture goal. Thornhill roared right back and 14 seconds later Ken- nedy took a pass from Howson (who was a stan- dout for Thornhill) and whistled a hard shot past Capotosto. The Hillers scored two more before the second period ended and started the third with a 4-2 lead. Peden took a perfect pass from Gropp and found himself in the clear. A Thornhill player pulled him down from behind and as he was sliding along the ice he managed to swipe the loose puck into the net. The best goal of the night came 37 seconds later as Girard. who was killing a penalty. took a pass from Gentry in full flight down the right wing. Just as he hit the top of the face-off circle Danny let go a bullet~likc drive that ripped past the Thornhill goalie before he could move. This goal seemed to sag the Thornhill team and give Travelways the insurance marker they needed. \_ JIG ‘ SAW $19.95
