CFGM had better luck January 2 as they defeated Surf Marine 4-2,. For the winners Reiner Plesch- berger and Stephen Bowers shared the scoring punch, each having two goals. Both added a third point on an assist and Mark Gossman got an assist. Surf’s goals came from Arthur VanHalteren and Gunther Bauer who was set up by Neil Putnam and Doug Anderson. Peter Tipold with Jim Wood claiming two assists and Brett Calder one. Wilson Niblett travelled to Aurora, January 2 and came away on the short end of a 3- 2 decision. This was a tough game to lose, and all in- dications were that the ‘green men' deserved a better fate. Glenn Apps opened the scoring at 1.15 with assists going to Doug MacLean and Troy Mitchell. Newmarket replied with a goal and a go-ahead marker, and at the end of the first period led 2-1. In the second period, Wilson Niblett Chev-Olds scored four unanswered goals, and went ahead 5-2. Scorers were Andrew Don from Paul Harrietha at 2.43, and exactly one minute later the pair repeated their performance. At 4.10 Troy Mitchell netted one, and at 14.09, Warren Nye slid in a backhand on a pass from Glenn Apps and Troy Mitchell. In the third period, Nye scored again with assists going to Andrew Don and Doug MacLean. Newmarket scored their third goal at 10.48, and with two seconds left in the game, Paul Harrietha potted one, assisted by Glenn Apps and Warren Nye. Dave Dean scored Thornhill's lone goal in the first period from Mudie. BANTAM II The Margell Thun- derbirds II thumped Fin~ churst Boys’ Clubs 7-1 in a December 29 game with the score telling the story. The Thunderbirds edged Richmond Hill 3-2 in a tightchecking game December 28 having to come from behind. Rich- mond Hill opened the scoring in the first but Thornhill tied it with Bob Dionne doing the job from Ian Billich and Drew Broadridge. Broadridge made it 2-1 in the second from Mike Parkinson only to have Richmond Hill tie it in the third. Buckler won the day for Thornhill with a score with Perrett assisting. Wayne Grant scored the lone goal of the first period but his teammates rapped in four unanswered goals in the second. Scoring were: Ward Williamson from Dave Dean; Dean from Tim Coughlin; Bill Buckler from Scott Martin; and Ian Billich from Drew Broadridge and Scott Fixter. Their final two goals came in the third with Mike Parkinson scoring from Perrett and Mudie; and Buckler from Dean. 3-1 before Thornhill came back with three consecutive goals to go ahead by +3. There was no scoring in the first but Thornhill broke the ice in the second as Mike Egli put the puck home on a breakaway. He also got the fourth goal. Dan Kennedy got the second one and Jim Bell the fifth. Thornhill Guaranty lost a close 4-3 game to Richmond Hill Saturday night. By Jim Browning The Thornhill Bantam A Margell Thunderbirds nipped Keswick 5-4 in a penalty-ridden Sunday game. Keswick took a two-goal lead in the first period before Thornhill got onto the board with Drew Broadridge scoring from Ian Billich. Keswick made it Dave Dean scored from Mike Mudie; Mudie from Glenn Perrett and then Drew Broadridge ,from Billich. Glen Perrett scored in the third from Dave Dean and Mudie and Keswick narrowed the gap to 5-4 and were pressing as the game ended. The Margells added another 5-2 win January 3 in a game against Maple as they dominated the first period scoring three unanswered goals. Maple opened the second period scoring but Thor- nhill's Dave Dean replied from Perrett and Mudie. Mike Parkinson scored Thornhill’s final goal with Maple getting its final one in the third. BANTAM AA ' The Thornhill Guaranty Realty T-Birds blanked Newmarket 5-0 Sunday in a fast moving contest with Goalie Gary Heaney picking up the shutout. The Thornhill boys were a trifle flat for the game after having played in the ng- Am tournament at Guelph and winning three out of their five games and finishing second in their division. Scoring for Thornhill were Jim Bell, Danny Kennedy and Scott Howson. Perrett opened the scoring with assists to Mudie and Greg Warga. Wayne Grant scored from Bill Buckler and Greg Warga; and Mike Mudie from Perrett. MINOR PEEWEES Tournaments; This holiday season has been a very busy time for the 'I‘homhill Thunderbirds with two tournaments The Don Mills tournament saw them winning one, tying one and losing one. At Milton they Bantam Thunderbirds edge Keswick team 5-4 Thornhill defeated Annunciation 7-1, Long Branch 4â€"0 and Richmond Hill 4-3 in sudden death overtime. Ian Morrison netted five goals during the tournament with three going to Bruce Cameron. Two goals each to Anthony Bucci, Peter Somers. and Andrew Holding. Singles to Mark Lemmon and Scott Roberts, Carl Levy was credited with six assists. in the championship game by 4-2. In a regularly scheduled game Sunday the Ready Mix Thunderbirds nipped Aurora 3-2 with Goalie Regan Gorman coming up with many fine saves to keep Thornhill alive. Aurora opened the scoring on a penalty shot but Thornhill came right back as Grant Davidson banged in a rebound from Scott Daly and Kevin Goble. Mike Sherwood made it 2-1 from Goble. Mike Sherwood scored his second and winning goal from Tim Wilson and Goble to make it Aurora came on strong in the third period but were held out by the defensive play of Jeff Allard. Steven Tuckey and Ralph Bryson until a fine slap shot found the mark. Goalie Gorman came to the rescue after this. Thornhill was outshot by Aurora 20-18. PEEWEE 11â€" SPECIAL REPORT. Between December 26 and 29. the Donaldson Barron Peewee II team competed in the Willowdale Lions tournament at North York Centennial Arena and made it to the finals of the “B” Division before bowing 3-2 to Peel Police in the cham- pionship game. The Donaldson Thun- derbirds put it all together to whomp Unionville 9-0 in an exhibition game January 4 with Goalie Steve Thyne picking up the shutout. Two goals each were scored by Carl Levy, Mark Lemmon and Ian Morrison with singles to Peter Somers, guis De Yong and Bruce ameron. Bob Thompson and [an Morrison each picked up two assists. won two but lost to Preston Goals by Anthony Bucci, Bryon Disera and Ian Morrison plus solid goaltending by Rob Peters added up to a 3-1 victory for the boys over King City January 3. The Donaldson boys had it tough against Maple December 23 before coming up with a 5-4 win after overcoming a 2-0 deficit. Bucci netted a hat-trick with Peter Somers and Carl Levy scoring the other two. PEEWEES The Thornhill Fisher Brothers Sports Peewees outscored their opposition 17-5 in four games but dropped the important one 4-1 to Thunder Bay in the “A” finals of the Richmond Hill Peewee Tournament. As a tune-up for the tournament the boys took on Bayridges and beat them for the third time this year by 4- 3 after being down 3-1 in the second period. They came back to score three unan- swered goals. Rick Seeley from Paul Howson and Jimmy Jones; Steve Mallett from Steve Sim, and Paul Myers with two unassisted goals were the scorers. Goals: Pearson from Myers and Howson; Sim from Dan Anderson and Pearson; Duhee Lee from Mallett and Todd McKnight; Mark Wiltshire from Pearson and Ander- son; and Pearson for the final goal. Their second game saw them downing Newmarket 3-0 in a toughie despite the fact they had three previous wins over that squad in league play. It was midway through the second before Pearson finally broke the scoreless tie with assists going to Mallett and Howson. Goalie John Morris kept them in the game until the third when Sim scored from Pearson and Anderson and Pearson from Wiltshire completed the scoring. They demolished Amerherst 8-0 in the third game with McKnight, Lee and Sim getting tw0 goals each, and Howson and Myers getting singles. Assists went to Pearson, three. McKnight and Lee, two, and Seeley, Jones, Anderson, and Wiltshire. That brought them into the grand championship against Thunder Bay in a game which saw incredible goaltending by both teams. Pearson from McKnight scored Thomhill‘s lone goal with 14 minutes left to make it 2-1. Thunder Bay went on to win by 4-1. Thornhill outshot Thunder Bay 43-24 and with a few breaks could have won the tournament. ATOMS Neil Crebbin led H & S Reliance to an 8-2 win over Maple in an exhibition game Sunday with four goals and two assists. Stephen Livingston was on target with two goals and one assist. David Wood and John Lee scored one each. Assists on the goals went to Steven Kinnari with three, Mark Feeney two, and one each to Harold Chopping, Ian Powers, Kent Davidson, Richard Arend and Chuck Pitcher. Scott Thorn performed well in the nets. “Star” awards to Stephen Livingston on forward and Kent Davidson on defence. MINOR MIDGETS Probably the winningest OMHA entry that Thornhill can boast these days is the Minor Midget squad coached by Fred Disera and Gord Morley. The team record to date is five wins in the last seven games. Peter Loftus, a newcomer to the Thornhill squad, scored his goal on a strong in- dividual end to end effort popping it in from almost behind the net. MILTON TOURNAMENT Following a 4-2 victory over Brampton in opening day action at the Milton Beaver Minor Tournament, Thornhill advanced to the semi-final against Newmarket. Point scorers were Pat Bertrand, three, Barry McEwen, three, Matt Nicholls, three, Bill Coville, one, Peter Loftus, Jason Hurlbut, Allen Ralph, Mark Riden‘ Goalie Howson played another outstanding game It was a superb hockey game, one of those with few penalties, end to end action and outstanding play by both teams. One of the tournament organizers called it the best game of the tournament, and “the team that wins this one will win their group championship." Newmarket went ahead by two goals.
