During the last month the coaching of Magna Midgets B has been taken over by Ken Ham, who is no stranger to the local hockey circles. Under his direction the club is working hard and appears now to be making progress. ' Schomberg came to town December 21 and the Magna team came up with a good effort to win 4-2. The locals gave up two goals in the first period and at one point trailed 2-0. They came back strongly on two goals by Green and singles by Williams and Ferrone. Neither the King team or the referees were in the holiday mood December 22 as they defeated Magna 4-1. Richmond Hill’s only goal Magna Midgets show continued progress The boys of the Thornhill Minor Midgets would like to express their thanks to two men who took on a last place team and helped them to enjoy hockey and win a few games. What baffles me (and what doesn't baffle me these days) is that the Rams are tied for second and are still fighting for a playâ€"off spot? And there are eight teams qualifying for playoffs in the 12-team loop “This is the first season since I've ’been coaching in this league that we‘ve had a race like this," said Brimblecombe. “A few games ago we had a seven game winning streak and we just stood still. Imagine if we had lost those games? We‘d be out of con- tention.“ 16 â€" THE LIBERAL, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1975 (Continued from Page 15) bination of four wins for us and four losses for Dixie puts us in.“ tun-LIV: Injuries Injuries threatened to flatten the Rams for a while, with five regulars out at one pint, but most of them have straggled back. Dear Mr. Sports Editor “We’re still hurting but most of them are mobile now," said Brimblecombe. Absent is Rick Febbo who is recovering from rib injuries suffered in a recent car accident. He might, just might make it back if'the team lasts into the third playoff rounds. In the meanwhile, Juvenile Tony Robinson was brought up and played very well. " "I‘m also happy with the way Mitch Edwards has come on.“ Said Brimblecombe. “He’s really picked up the slack.“ Finally: “It’s a pretty odd situation. We’re tied for second, have a better record than last year at this point, and we‘re still fighting for a playoff spot. And we can still finish first." Don't go on, Karl. Can‘t stand the tension. Get down to the arena and see some exciting hockey. I mean you hockey fans. January 22 Which one is the Weber? Give up? Well, that‘s Dick on the left and Bill on the right. The two Richmond Hill twins are in their third season with Cornell after playing their previous hockey with the Richmond Hill Junior Rams. The twosome will be participating in an exhibition hockey game with U. of T at Varsity Arena Name the Weber twins: Bill or Dick? Stroud came to Richmond Hill for the first game of the New Year and quickly took a 3-0 lead. Magna fought back and with four minutes to go were leading 5-3. However. Stroud got a good bounqe for their fourth goal and with less than a minute to go and with a Hiller in the penalty box, pulled their goal tender and tied the game. Coach Dick Bertrand, in his fifth season here, says the boys “have set a splendid example for the squad by their going all-out eVery time they’re on the ice . . . they are certainly fine kids and a pleasure to coach". A ITHICANew York â€" Twin brothers Bill and Dick Weber are having another good season for Cornell’s hockey team. Each has accounted for five points in the six contests played to date â€" Bill has scored four goals and registered an assist while Dick has assisted five times. In the Big Red’s most recent game, a 10-4 victory over St. Lawrence, Bill had a goal and Dick two assists. Cornell has a 4-1-1 record to date having downed York 8-4, RPI 8-2 and Yale 5-2‘ lost to Brown 4-3 in overtime and tied Ottawa 3-3, with all games played at home. - Oddly, the twins had exactly the same number of goals and assists in 27 contests last season â€" six goals and 10 assists. At Richmond Hill High School both competed in the same sports â€" football, basketball and lacrosse. Studying in the School of Hotel Administration, they are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Donal Weber of 31 Wright Street. They also played together with the Richmond Hill Junior “B” Rams along with Wayne Stokes (also of Cornell). Wilson Niblett Minor Peewees played host to their counterparts from Thornhill Sunday in a game which ended in a 2-all tie. The young Rams opened the scoring at 2:43 of the first period on a goal by Brian Cates, who was setup by Pat Lawlor. Paul Beckwith and Warren Nye sent Doug MacLean in on a breakaway on which he scored. Both Doug Macklin and his Thornhill partner Anthony Risi made some spectacular saves in their respective nets. Thornhill fought back and scored two goals within a minute. The first at 7:29 of the third period was nétted by Rob Humphries and the second at 8:25 by Steve Tschipper. Niblett peewees tie Thornhill XX 1-0391 As has happened all year the defence of Mark Ellison, Alan Jones, Steve Moritsugu and Bruce Strain kept the score low with help from Steve Ritchie who stopped 15 of 17 shots. A&W are on the road in Maple tonight (Wednesday) at 7:15 pm. Greg Binkley, Jeff Bells and Martin Wildberger were entered in the sprint events for Richmond Hill Athletic Club and Dianne Diggins and Cheryl Paxton were leaping into the broad jump pit. Tim Turner and Steve Brown, two graduates of Bayview Secondary School, were competing for Western. The other games saw the Thornlea Midgets winning a 35â€"34 cliff-hanger over Bayview and the powerful Thornlea Juniors main- taining their string of wins This game was one of three held at Thornlea as the regular basketball season got underway. Stroud poured on the pressure and tried to run the boys out of the rink with some hard checks but A&W stood their ground which resulted in a goal which turned out to be the winner at 2:12 of the third period, when Mark Ellison. drove a slapshot at the net from just inside the blue line and Brian Hull was in position to tip it into the net. Stroud came close and finally scored with just 1:46 left in the game. The local boys held Stroud off {or a well deserved win. The CNE Coliseum track in Toronto was jammed with young perspiring athletes from as far away as Ottawa and Windsor for the first indoor track meet of the 1975 season, with 500 par- ticipants registered. Two Canadian records were set and two other times narrowly missed as Ontario’s top track athletes took step one towards the Montreal Olympics in 1976. Bantam Martin Wild- berger registered a 7.8 second time in the 50 metres and Long Jumper Cheryl Paxton a 14 foot six inch distance. Long Jumper Dianne Diggins managed to record but one official jump out of six tries, but that was good enough for a fifth place finish in a field of 20 jum- pers. On her first jump Dianne hit the board dead on for a 16 foot five inch jump, but then fouled on all the rest. Winning distance was 17 feet eight inches. This is the first year local athletes have not gone to the Coliseum for mid-week training and the loss of this valuable ditioning was most evident. Bayview Secondary School Senior high scorer Paul Jarvie goes up with a one- handed shot on this drive as he's ~pursued by Thornlea's Paul Allison (21) and Dave Drew (5). If Paul didn‘t make it on this one he made it up during the game as he led his team to a 65-57 win with 22 points. Important indoor events “It was a pretty 'good game," said Bayview Coach Nuttall. “I think we would have had an easier time of it except for the absence of Trent McCabe who is one of our big players.“ The same Bayview squad had opened the season with an overwhelming 86-23 win over Langstaff Secondary School which says it all. Brian Hill put the puck in the net with assists going to Duane Aubie and Jim Flett at the 7:16 mark of the first period. Maple took ad- vantage of a Hill lapse and tied the game at the 4 min. mark. The game settled back into a tough hitting contest until late in the second when Jackie Woods was in the right place at the corner of the Maple net and flipped in a pass from Centre Gary Sutherland. Mark McMillan led the offensive with 17 points followed by Rob Morrow with 12, and Mike Solitar with 10.
