(they don‘t get rich on the money) and ice-time which amounts to $100 a week for practices and $150 a game. I was surprised that on the night of the game the club rents the ice from about 6 pm to gametime at 8 pm to assure the ice is in good shape. Mmmm, makes good sense. ' Sob. sob ’ I was starting to feel like the writer of sob sister stories at this point so I burst out and asked Mr. Dunkiey why he did it? After all. he never struck me as the world’s unhappiest man. Maybe the world’s second or third but never first. “Oh, it had a lot of good moments,†he agreed. “You get to meet some fine people. It’s a challenge. We all need that. Mind you, there‘s the odd franchise that makes a profit but they‘re few and far between. If you‘ve got a lot of money, buy a club, and write the losses off on your taxes.†‘ Dunkley got out it because “I‘d been involved in it for seven years. I got the feeling if I hadn’t made the move I'd be there the next 20 years.“ So he tossed the reins to GM Neil Walters and President Dick Ball who. he states, “are doing a fine job." Finally Don’t‘forget the annual Richmond Hill Hockey and Fun Night next Monday at the arena at 8 pm. It‘ll feature an exhibition game between the NHL Old- timers and the York Regional Police. The fun will also include clowns. rickshaw rides. came and moose (mmh) milk. There will be a hospitality room from 7.30 pm. Just then my phone rang. It was a minor hockey league parent upbraiding me (nicely, mind you) about forgetting to mention her son had scored a goal against some other team last week. “That‘s another reason I got out." said Dunkley with a smile. “There's a'lot of aggravations. But, overall, I enjoyed the experience." So what did I do with the spare change that was kicking around in my jeans? I went out and blew it all on a long play record. 7 The evening is being sponsored by the El Shamaly Shrine Club and the Knights of Columbus with proceeds to Shrine and Knights of Columbus charities. The NHL'ers take on York Regional Police at Richmond Hill Arena Monday night. Ice-fishing, slow start Iceâ€"fishing has had a very slow start this season, largely due to the unsettled weather conditions in Southern Ontario. We are very fortunate in this area to have Lake Simcoe so close at hand. The fishâ€"hut operators there try their utmost to make an ice- fishing trip an affair to be enjoyed by the entire family. The old hut with the wooden stove is a thing of the past. Oil-heated huts took over several years ago, but at present, most operators have changed over to propane heat and light. No longer do we emerge after a night’s fishing smelling of oil and covered» in soot. I have a suspicion that this was well planned in order to make ice-fishing a family outing. Checking with some operators, I find that more and more huts are rented for the day or night by the whole family each year. Bombardier's away Transportation to the but is usually provided by Bombardier, a few of which are even heated, so all you have to take along is some warm clothing and your food. All fishing tackle as well as bait is provided or can be rented for a small fee, which some operators refund after you return the equipment. The operator will help you set up your gear and give helpful hints. He will even check up on you if you .so desire. Fishing is done in from 35 to 100 feet of water. Whitefish, the most abun- dant species in Simcoe, is usually taken over some shoal in about 40 feet. Spreaders are used and are placed right on the bottom. During the season, the operator will bait the holes trailblozeri A super hatchback sports coupe from Volkswagen. 0-50 in 8.2 seconds 102 mph. The Whitefish, used to such a regular feeding, will visit the holes at least a couple of times during the day, giving you some fast ,and exciting action. Laketrout are taken at all depths. Fishing for trout is most productive with a large minnow on a single line or with one of the special ice-fishing lures. Large laketrout, exceeding 20 pounds are taken each year through the ice. During the slower times, perch. herring and smelt should give you ample action to keep you awake. Anyone who has never had a good feed of Lake Simcoe perch doesn‘t know what he is missing! Ups anddowns Like all fishing, Simcoe has its ups and downs. Sometimes the action is better on the north side than on the south. I would suggest that you call an operator before you head up and make sure fishing is productive. Most important, check with him to see that the ice is safe, as this has been the main problem this year. As with most activities, weekends are very busy and reservations are needed. Space permitting, I hope to give you a report on ice- fishing on Simcoe next week, along with a list of the ice-hut operators. 884-9274 ‘BUyY YOUR NEW , {Plus 24,000Mile- Wammy: SMALL CAR CENTREFLTD.
