We are very fortunate in this area to have Lake Simcoe so close at hand. The fishâ€"hut operators there try their utmost to make an ice- fishing trip an affair to be enjoyed by the entire family. The old hut with the wooden stove is a thing of the past. Oil-heated huts took over several years ago, but at present, most operators have changed over to propane heat and light. No longer do we emerge after a night’s fishing smelling of oil and covered» in soot. I have a suspicion that this was well planned in order to make ice-fishing a family outing. Checking with some operators, I find that more and more huts are rented for the day or night by the whole family each year. I would suggest that you call an operator before you head up and make sure fishing is productive. Most important, check with him to see that the ice is safe, as this has been the main problem this year. As with most activities, weekends are very busy and reservations are needed.
