Thorncrest Motel came out ahead 4-3 over Carlisle Real Estate in a well-played contest. Scoring by Thorn- crest were David Abernethy with a pair, Shawn Cooke and Mark Rothwell with one each and Robert Leach with a helper. For Carlisle Gordy Peters contributed both tallies with Jim Formenton getting an assist. ATOM Oak Ridges’ Club 99 defeated Richvale's Herron’s Sales & Service 7- 2, despite a valiant effort by the whole team. Herrons seemed to lose momentum when their captain, Larry Thorsell, was injured shortly after putting his team in the lead by one goal. From then on the powerful Club 99 had it all their own way and remained unbeaten for the whole season. Herron's other points were contributed by Craig Fenn with a goal. Chris Wan- schura. Tom Bucci and Bruce Maheu with an assist each. The York Simcoe mixed team placed ninth and the men‘s team twelfth. Twenty zones participated in the Ontario finals and the York Simcoe teams fared well in overall standings. York Simcoes best showing was in the womens team, as Barb Magee and Diane Ingram led the team to a fifth placeI finish . Other members were Jenny Richard, Betty Wolfreys, Pauline McNaught and F10 Blanchard. The womens team score was 9348 for eight games and they fell 16 pins shy of fourth place money. PEEWEE R&R Motors met the Oak Ridges Panthers in the second round of the in- terlocking playoffs and outplayed and outshot them but had to settle for a 2-2 tie. Due to a few inconsistencies on both benches the game will be rescheduled to see who meets W&P Motors in the finals. Brian Watts, who turned in a good game and was the opportunist for R&R, got both goals with assists on both going to Paolo Delplavignano. Joey De Haas got a helper on the first goal. Robert Cashin, Andrew Rose, Scott Harrell and Delplavignano played standout games to keep the Panthers away from the Richvale goal. This years womens champion is Debbie Dennis of Tri-County, her total of 2223 won her the cham- pionship, in the mens division Lloyd Ormerod won with a 2243 eight game total and he bowls out of Hamilton. in good form as they beat Music Shoppe 7-3 in an exhibition game at Bond Lake. Music Shoppe goals came from Bill Mitchell with a couple and Gordon Gertley with Mat Hozjan earning two assists and Markus Heinecke one. In an ekhibition game in the Hill Ray-More Con- struction came to life and I had a great time at Hamilton not' only on the bowling lanes but at the parties that were held after and after I finish writing this column I‘ll start to rest up for next year. Jim Semple, John Granton and David Ross also hit the target for the winners with Ross also getting two assist points, Bruce Sinmaz, Clarence Greer and Michael Reeve one point each. Dominic Pacitto and Tony Von der Sanden were the goalgetters for United with help from Gavin Butler and Mauro Fantin, the latter playing a strong defensive game. G.C. Romano came up with an excellent game but still lost to Oak Ridges Cougars February 9. Mark Murphy connected for two goals and won the Pon- derosa player of the week award. Dave Twidale and Eric Hamailainen ac- counted for the other scoring and Trevor Williams, Donny Peters and Harold Levy got helpers. Robert Haehnel and Hamailainen played very good games. they got weaker. Doug Everton scored both Rich- vale goals and Jeff Baker and Neil Rothwell were given assists. In recording the shutout, goalie Steve Ritchie made several fine saves. R. Bose Deputy Planning Director In the first game of the league semi-finals Hillcrest Mall defeated Newmarket 6- 2. Newmarket came out fast and showed the form they must have had to defeat Barrie. However. before the first _period was over Richvale opened the scoring when Bryan Murchison laid a perfect pass on the stick of Greg Payne right in front of the net. The score remained 1-0 until the 5:23 mark of the third when the Hillers went, up 2-0 on some fine passing. Barry Munro picked up his second point of the game when he passed across the crease to left winger Billy Easton who jammed it in from the corner of the net. A&W closed out the scoring with 1:40 left in the game on an end-to-end rush by defenceman Mark Ellison who scored unassisted. Skating hard, the Hillcresters popped in four more goals in the second period to Newmarket’s one. Scorers were Reid Warner, Ken Ablett, Chris DeMeo and Dave Hartwick. Assisting were Hartwick, Ablett, Peter Fraser, Stephen Ostep, Bruce Bailey and Steve Wilson with three. Wilson was also voted star of the game and winner of A&W Atoms hosted a fast- skating Barrie club Saturday night and came up with a solid team effort to take the contest 3â€"0. The first period was scoreless as both teams missed excellent scoring chances. At the 5:37 mark of the second A&W scored on a fine passing play when Jackie Woods dug the puck out from behind the net to centre Barry Munro who quickly got his shot away from the slot. Newmarket scored in the first period when the Hillcresters had plenty of pressure on but just could not score. The second period was scoreless, again with Rich- vale having the edge in play. In the third they finally got results for their labors with three unanswered goals. A&W’s old rivals from Orillia were in town February 14 and for the third time this season the Hillers played well enough to win but came out on the short end of a 5-4 score. A combination of costly penalties and failure to finish off scoring plays gave Orillia the edge. In three ffieetings with Orillia this seaSOn A&W have lost 4-3, 4-3 and 75-4. The Hillers visited Orillia February 16 in the final meeting of the schedule for these two clubs and A&W came up with one of their best efforts of the year, blanking Orillia 3-0. The cliffhanger of the season came in the third and final game February 9 as Hillcrest Mall edged Newmarket 2-0. It was a- ‘scoreless tie at the end of regular play with Mario dePiero playing a fantastic game in goal, saving time after time on breakaways and with two men short. Speed is an important consideration for every snowmobile operator. The Hillers iced the game at 7:47 of the third when the ever- moving Jackie Woods scored from Don Head and Alan Jones. Snowmobilers drive carefully WASHER winner. Newmarket puHed their goalie with 36 seconds seconds to go but Ricvale held them off until Ken Ablett stole the puck and scored in the empty net with six seconds left. The next series will be against either Richmond Hill or Thornhill. MIDGET In the OMHA Midget B series Richvale Northtown defeated Alliston 5-0 February 7 at Bond Lake Arena, coming back after losing the first game. A great defensive game coupled with good skating and passing by the forwards resulted in victory. Harold Simpson scored a hat trick and picked up an assist, Wayne McNarty and Gary Langfield got the other counters, Bill Cromb was awarded two assists and Greg McDowell one. Mike Johnston played like a rover in the net. As Johnston came up with another superb game to record his second con- secutive shutout of the playoffs Northtown Midgets downed Alliston 34) in the third game of the series to lead two games to one. Great defensive play and great skating and passing were features of this con- test. Scoring were Tony Caranci, Steve Cromb, and John Mariciak with Simpson and Rick Binder picking up two assist points, Caranci and Mariciak one each. ATOMS Richvale Atom Royals started the week slowly February 4 as they tied the rapidly improving Wood- bridge team 1-1. The Royals managed to maintain their lead for most of the game, including a minute and a half in the second period when they were two men short. The penalty-killing team of Brian Mason, Craig Wolfenden and Iafano did a fine job of staving off the Woodbridge power play. Woodbfidée scoi‘ed the tying goal with just over a minute left to play. The Richvale Atoms took their first point of the season from the strong Sharon team February 7 in another 1-1 battle. Goaltender Johnson’s sparkling play kept Richvale in the game in the early going as Sharon got off to a fast start, pep- pering Johnson with a barrage of shots. His fine play limited Sharon’s scoring to a first period goal. As the game wore on Richvale gradually gained momentum and began to carry the game to Sharon. Allan Evelyn tied the score early in the second with a slapshot from the point which caught the upper lefthand corner of the net. Later in the same period he was foiled on a breakaway. The strong play of the Royals’ defensive corps, led by Craig Wolfenden had a large bearing on the out- come of the game.
