Enjoy tea, shopping to back YCH Do you remember when Keele Street was just two lanes wide and, from Highway 7 north to Maple, was lined on both sides with Maple trees? Sighted this week: three large noisy crows. one unhappy robin in a snow shower and a flock of purple finches . . . Maple’s younger citizens seem to be oblivious to cars or they have great faith in the fast- braking abilities of the drivers. However, cheer up, the worst is yet to come. The bikes will soon be out in force. Perhaps a reminder it is proper to walk against the flow of traffic. and bicycles are vehicles, subject to the same rules as cars, would be in order . . . The County of Gray, even as Hardin County, has something to be said for it too. Like Abraham Lincoln, Biff began life on the farm; maybe not splitting fence rails, but with a clear eye and a strong right arm we meet him next at McMaster University and anyone who had the scholarly and saintly Dr. Joseph Gilmour as his dominie was off to a good start, none better. They haven‘t got a name for it yet (suggestions would not be out of order) but this motto in Gaelic (none other) should be carved deep into the mantel of their quite magnificent fireplace: Sith do'n tigh so. which being in- terpreted means Peace be to this house Biff was born March 16, 1906, in the Ontario countryside in Maxwell, near Beaver Valley, County of Grey. With admirable good sense and imagination and not a little “know how", they transformed a schoolhouse on the 6th concession into a spacious and gracious home. Berton Andrewz48 A pen portrait We all miss Biff with his good- humored smile and his Scottish bonnet (somehow they go together) but happily in “retirement†the Andrews are not too far away. The sound of “F†in Biff may have been borrowed from Benton Andrew’s second given name, Franklin, but actually his middle name is Friend- ship. That goes too for the lady of his heart, who with him made the Presbyterian manse in Maple a home of warmth and welcome through all the 15 years of his ministry in Maple. The only trouble was that when they called for “The Rocky Road to Dublin†all the chances were that it would turn out to be “Ye Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doonâ€. The piano and the violin he picked up as he went along (almost as versatile as Maple United’s Stan Snowden. Al- most. nobody can quite measure up to him.) And then the Bagpipes! He learned the art (if you can call it that) from a Scot of the Western Isles. In curling (with his granite stone from Ailsa Craig, he would use none other) or as a bowler (left arm at that), he was on occasion the cham- pion and ever a good loser. In his leisure hours Biff was ever a boon companion‘ Later as an army. chaplain with the Canadian Infantry, Biff brought Don Chaucer’s line in Canterbury Tales into living reality: “But Christes Lore and his apostles twelve He taught, but first he followed it himselveâ€. Thus fortified he didn’t take the easiest road. but set out for the Canadian west close to the days of the covered wagon and on the very edge of the depression era. That needed a good heart and he had it. At a later date he volunteered for overseas missionary service. With his gallant wife Margaret Sutherland, he went to British Guiana in a singularly difficult three-year project and adventure. All honor to them. He studied Divinity at Knox College second only to Edinburgh and St Andrews by the Northern Sea. 01: write: Hollvwood Bread. Box H. Holhwméd. Florida 33020.
