These are the kind of derogatory comments I get all the time from my four “charming” daughters. Admittedly, they only remember me as a white collar worker in the con- struction industry. They have no idea at all that their father used to unplug people's toilets, install new plumbing fix- tures, dig trenches. drive a repair service truck or such. :I'hey don’ t realize that the family‘s chief breadwinner was once one of Ontario‘s “plungerers”. Her little son answered the phone and when asked where his mommy was, replied “she’ s in the bathtub with the plumber”! Several members of the GMG spent a few messy but satisfying hours May 7, learning and practicing the art of “batik” under the talented leadership of Jenny Ono, a member of the Kingcraft Batik Group. Batik is done by drawing your design on material with hot wax, then dyeing the fabric in a cold dye; then removing the wax. The wéxed area remains the original color of the fabric. And'it all seemed so natural; for Daddy was a plumber) It isn‘t my fault if I'm never around the house when an emergency strikes, and Donna has to use the plumber’s helper on the toilet; or that my family always calls Grandad when the toilet tank needs ad- justing or a faucet needs a washer; or that the weather stripping around the front entrance makes it next to impossible to close the door; or that wallpaper goes on twice as fast if Donna does it all herself. The menial tasks no longer inspire me. I have long since hung up my reseater, threader and bib overalls. My plunger has been given to another! tragic accident at Frank Unterlander’s Garage recently when a young child left in a truck with the motor running, reportedly shifted gears, sideswiped another car, pushed a parked car over the embankment and then followed it. I believe the child was unhurt, but hopefully parents will think twice before leaving a child unattended in any car.
