By Jane Stel The Richmond Hill Minor Soccer Association still has a finger left in the Ontario Provincial Cup after games played last weekend by three teams. Richmond Hill Scholastic Major Peewees defeated London Portuguese by 1-0 with Eddie McNally netting the lone goal minutes into the second half. This is the best a Richmond Hill team has done in years in Ontario Cup play. The Scholastics‘ next game is in Niagara Falls August 10. Not so good Other Ontario Cup action saw CFGM Major Mosquitoes felled 7-1 by a strong Scarboro St. Andrews squad. Richmond Hill held its own for the first half which ended in a 1-1 tie. Their lone goal was scored by Adrian Steenson. Richmond Hill Gamma Minor Mosquitoes went down 4-2 to Mississauga. Good hitting, good infield and outfield cat- ches and getting the ball in accurately won it for the Trust gals. Richmond Hill was a goal down in the first minute but kept attempting to fight back but were unable to penetrate a stubborn defence. The Richvale Collision Bantam Girls B team dropped a 22-14 game to Guaranty Trust. The girls were hitting well but errors held them back. Bantam Girls A Team: Maple downed Guaranty Trust 12-0. A reminder that next week‘s games are a continuation of the exhibition series and coaches should be prepared to referee their own games during this time. Schedules Schedules will be available shortly for the last remaining games in league play and round robin contests to determine the teams who will play on Cup final day October 4. Coaches and players should be prepared to play two games in some weeks and also to start games earlier at 6:30 pm. The activity on the courts at Rich- mond Hill is another indication of the growing interest in tennis. There was a time when the demand for courts would now be slackening off but every night finds them crowded and organized events have more entries than ever before. For people wanting less competitive tennis the social night on Wednesday is still popular...beginners or in- termediate, all get three or four mat- ches striving hard, but always with distinction for the prize of a can of balls. In all ages and categories Richmond Hill is doing well...in the under 12 category Paul Beck rose through the clamoring ranks to the quarter finals at the Sir Winston Churchill tournament and to the semi-finals in the Ontario Closed. Janet Sheppard, under 14, also made the quarter finals (bear in mind, that’s the last eight competitors) in the Sir Winston Churchill. Majors win The Majors won 4-2 at Brampton mostly due to the Augusts, Peter Wenzel, Phil Blanchard, Brian Stainer and the wraith-like Arnie Balogh. Pat Lohman and Val Bruhn blew their debut but not without a struggle. The YorkSimcoe team beat Aurora 3-2 and are now top of the standings.
