Second runner up is Lesley Shelton of Bayview Secondary and third runner up is Elvira Varriale, also of Langstaff. First runner up to Karin is Laura DiBatista of Langstaff Secondary School. Her next official ap- pearance will be Feb. 23 at an Old Timers hockey match in Richmond Hill. For being chosen Winter Carnival Queen for 1976, Karin received a lavish muskrat coat. a 1976 Carnival Queen necklace, roses, cosmetics and a frisbee. Other interests for this active girl include: collecting stamps. par- ticipating (tennis) and watching sports (hockey), playing chess and reading historical biographies. She likes languages as she speaks English and French, and also studies German and Latin, yet her sights are set on a career in dentistry. Karin, an only child who resides at 367 Kerrybrook Dr., is 15 years old. She is in Grade 10 at Richmond Hill High where she is active on the school debating team and the year book committee. And when Karin says she likes meeting people she takes little time to convince one she means it. "It's exciting and it has brought me closer to my friends." RICHMOND HILL â€" Karin Steiner, our eighth Winter Carnival Queen, is a bubbly, energetic young lady. Karin said being selected carnival queen for 1976 is “quite an honor”. At the Heritage Day flag raising ceremony (Canadian and Carnival flags) led by Mayor David Schiller at noon Saturday, a stirring rendition of 0 Canada was led by the harmonious voices of Richmond Hill’s own town councillors. Queen leads busy lfie Peter Merrell, Kinsmen pr commented briefly on H propriateness of Heritage Day Children’s races â€" Boys 3 and under â€" Syeed Saleuddin, Terry Woldenga and Jeremy Fieldberg. Carnival queen Karin Steiner and Luke (the Ookpik look-alike) were kept busy throughout the winter carnival proceedings with presentations. RICHMOND HILL â€" The eighth winter carnival was an overwhelming success despite Sunday rains which forced cancellation of most last day events. I Now, hoEkey and broomball matches stir carnival participants. Later, the gathering crowd roars its approval as Gunner, the North American frisbee champion Labrador dog, performs his acrobatic frisbee catching antics.. All the while, Luke strolls the Mill Pond, content that all are happy and enjoying themselves, suppressing a smile. He seems blithefully dazed by the pretty girls which whirl past. Winter Carnival competition winners are in order of placings: On Friday evening large crowds gathered at the Mill Pond to skate to the music of local talent â€" Bender â€" featuring Jeff Knowles, Glenn Belcher and Jeff Moulton. Between skating sessions people gathered at the fires, situated at the edge of the pond, to ward off the evening chill. Now, the three members of the Canadian Parabatic Skydiving Team bring everyone to life as they free-fall from the passing airplane. As the parachutes open, Rocky has manoeuvering difficulties and drifts into someone’s pool up on the west bank of the Mill Pond and children scurry to see the happening. The other two chutists are more accurate and land within a few feet of the orange target and are immediately engulfed by curious wellâ€"wishers. Sunday bi'ought rain in abundance leaving the marquee tent as the last outpost of the winter carnival. After charming Karin Steiner was crowned carnival queen for 1976, skating continued until midnight. Satufday began with skating races for children from three to 15 years While all these events are in progress a large sleigh, loaded to capacity and drawn by a two-horse team, skims around the perimeter of the pond. And Luke wanders silently away, looking like a wet beaver, knowing another year must pass before Karin Steiner will snuggle up to him and announce â€" “it’s Winter Carnival time”.
