Richmond Hill and Thornhill residents Photo by Danlom Hi-jinks honor $4“ mythical hero “I ” THORNHILL â€" There was a Pharly J. Kumquat Memorial Festival held at Thornlea Secondary School last Friday. The funny thing is, Pharly J. Kumquat is not dead. He isn‘t even sick. He is in fact a cartoon character. champion of all sports, matinee idol. expert surgeon. etc., who was given recognition by his school. Students had the af- ternoon free to indulge in some of the many un- typical events. They made history Before the day‘s events were kicked off though, history was made in Thornlea's very halls. Andre F. Bourbeau, alias the Bourbonic Man, with a finely tuned tricycle. an aviator‘s cap and goggles. stepped out of his usual role of teaching math, to jump over nine cups of water, an apparent record for the school at least. This was much to the delight of the enormous crowd gathered in the halls. Gunky pie fight Following that came a pie-eating contest, which led into a short but gunky pie fight. A small per- centage of people managed to make it home By Mike Tennant Simpsonsâ€"Sears Ltd. without smelling like banana cream. With one fine mess after another, there was a Twit Tournament. with eligible teachers and students competing for the title of “best twit." This. of course. was derived from a bed- ridden Monty Python gag. Then came the night- mare, at least for me. I had to face a seemingly enormous crowd while hesting a beauty contest â€" between boys who were dressed up as girls. It was a horror straight from a Vincent Price movie, seeing my sweetheart in the first row of the crowd while a bristle-faced transvestite attempts to smother me. There was even a balloon-breaking session, in which several con- testants were (pun in- tended) knocked flat. Music a relief When that was over, the Bourbonic Man, ob» viously exhausted by his triumph just hours before, could not manage a win in the teacher’s tricycle race. During the afternoon, there were ordinary rock and roll bands, playing ordinary (apparently good) music in the or- dinary gymnasium. A welcome relief. That night too. there was a dance featuring Columbus. If Pharly was watching, he was- certainly con- Fused. ADULTS STUDENTS *Senior Citizens *Children ATTENTION T.T.c.
