On Sunday, I was in Schomberg. where some 1,000 people gathered in the Com- munity Centre to pay tribute to those who founded St. Patrick's Parish 100 years ago. The Most Reverend Philip Pocock, Archbishop of Toronto presided. Our history relived By coincidence, it was also the 150th anniversary of the first Roman Catholic Priest to visit that Parish area in 1826. The present Pastor. Father Arthur McMahon had two personal anâ€" niversaries to celebrate. It was 10 years since he first came to the Parish and he was ordained 39 years ago. - In the beginning, vir- tually all of the parishoners at St. Patrick’s were of Irish descent. Their numbers grew so that there were 75 Catholic families in the area by 1875. The great exodus from the Ontario countryside then took over and by 1900, the Parish had decreased to some 50 families. It is now up to 150 families and according to the 1971 By Sinclair Stevens MP York Simcoe Some readers may not realize that in addition to nearly 40,000 books, the library has more than 50 magazines which may be horiowed. We subscribe to most of the popular general- interest periodicals and also to many which are concerned with more specialized fields such as astrology, backpacking, bicycling, finance. hockey. motor boating, and so forth. This week’gvnew books include two remarkable biographies. Margot Peters has produced a scholarly but smoothly readable study of Charlotte Bronte which contains less literary analysis and focuses more on her subject’s turbulent emotional life than did the earlier Charlotte Bronte by Winifred Gerin. With sympathy and insight the author examines the novelist's relationships with her unstable brother, her neurotic sisters, with other important Victorian authors, and above all, with the two men whom she loved so desperately and tragically. (Non-fiction) Unquiet Soul, by Margot Ppters_ The world renowned evangelist offers his in- terpretation of the role played by angels in the life of every human being. In this new book he explains why his study of Biblical references and his analysis of much testimony and other evidence have con- vinced him of the frequent and benevolent in- tercession of angels in the affairs of men. (Non- fiction) BUS/bass consu/‘ling offered Angels â€" God's Secret» Agents, _l)y Billy Graham T h e s e r v i c e , established in 1974, to provide independent businesses with practical solutions to problems, will charge a nominal fee to clients. Elliot Hoover, with good reason. becomes coldly certain that the 10-year-old child of another couple is the reincarnation of his own daughter, Audrey Rose. After a notorious court trial and a risky psychological experiment, he manages to persuade the tormented young girl and. eventually, even her frantic parents of the truth of his incredible claim. Audrey Rose is a far-aboveaverage example of the reincarnation-possession-witchcraft school of plotting. Her letters and journal tell the grim yet inspiring story of her valiant exploits. and of her eventual capture and death at the hands of the Nazis. (Non-fiction) Hannah Senesh. Her Life and Diary. translated by Set in the time of the American Revolution, this historical novel in diary form is based on the life of Philadelphia belle, Peggy Shippen. The beautiful coquette, who was ardently courted by officers in both the British and Continental armies, coolly withheld her heart and kept her own counsel amid the trecherous power shifts until her fateful meeting with Benedict Arnold, a man even more starcrossed than she herself. Peggy is an exceptionally vivid story with special appeal for young adults. (Fiction) Peggy. by Lois Dupcan A librarian looks a! new Markham Library booki IB'D‘DIK WAILIK Canadian Census, there are about 2.000 Roman Catholics in the Parish or about 20 per cent of the total population.
