THORNHILL â€" The manner of screening volunteers, and the ways in which schools, police and parents cooperate to make block parent programs work were topics at a recent meeting at Bayview Fairways Public School. YRP Constable Douglas Young attended the meeting and an- swered questions about the role of police. This program‘ which has worked successfully in the London area for a number of years. entails simple. common sense rules. For example it is im- perative that the school be notified before 9.30 am. if your child will not be attending that day. The program was in- stituted in London after a little boy. the son of working parents. was abducted. The school staff presumed the child was home sick, and the parents. who had seen him safely on his way to school. presumed the child was at school. CII. By the time it was realized that the child was missing. several hours had elapsed and the child was found dead. It is hoped that there is no need to be anxious that a similar tragedy will occur. Rather. the Block Parent program is set up primarily to dealt with more mundane things like a fainting spell or a twisted ankle. and with a general close contact between parents, school. police and children. Volunteers, who need not be parents of school children, are asked to obtain a form from Lynda Chapman, 19 King‘s Inn Trail, 889â€"4986. Forms will be checked by York Regional Police. It is expected this program will be fully functional by September.
