In the fall the Jewish community will celebrate a series of important holy days. Rosh Hashana is the New Year (1537) and begins a period of self- examination and repentance lasting 10 days and culminating in Yom Kippur. the Day of Atonement. These are followed by Sukkot (Tabernacles) which commemorate the 40 years of wandering in the desert between the Land of Egypt and the Land of Israel. We are reminded by the sukkah (booth). that we construct that the Jews dwelt in frail abodes during their journey, and we also recall the frailty and precariousness of life itself. The festival concludes with Simhat Torah (Rejoicing in the Teaching) when the yearly cycle of reading the Torah (Pentateuch) concludes and begins again. This wonderful ability that we have does not mean that it is an easy task, and, in fact. we spend much of our time rationalizing our behavior rather than examining it. In our heart of hearts we believe that we are perfect, and it is only others whose faults are so obvious to behold. So the beginning of self examination and repentance is an honest acknowledgement that we are not perfect, and that taking a good look at Seasonal work hard to find T H O R N H I L L â€" Students are faced with hard times in their search for summer employment this year, according to Canada Manpower Centre for students.
