Jean Gourlay, Lohman lose in field hockey OAK RIDGES â€" The Richmond Hill Dynes Jewellers ran off with the turkey and left Thornhill Thunderbirds holding a broken wish-bone in their Thanksviving Weekend Mid-Ontario Jun‘ior ‘B’ hockey doubleheader. The Jewellers and their rivals from “down the road" collided head-0n Friday and Monday with the ‘ridge' boys winning by 8-3 and 6-2 respec- tively. Everywhere I went I kept meeting ball players, coaches. or whatever, complaining about games washed out by the rotten weather. Bright moments But all was not lost. There were some bright moments including Sid Moreland’s Richmond Hill Midget softball team. It went right through to the OASA finals before suc~ cumbing. Apparently, it’s the best showing by a Hill minor softball team since 1966 or thereabouts. But more on this later. So that, more or less, was a bit of my Thanksgiving. It seemed a fit« ting end to a past season of general frustration for softball in the area. Turkey talk There was nothing left but to go home and take my frustrations out on the traditional turkey. Not eat it. Beat it to death with its own wishâ€" bone. In the meanwhile some other driver started frothing at the mouth about his way being blocked by our cars. He kept rubbing the corner of his bumper to such an extent that he actually caused more damage to it himself. Rubbed off the chrome. Broke law The driver was only slightly less excited and exclaimed to me 16 times, or was it 17, that I had broken the law by backing into him. To tap the moment off, I later backed my car, rather gently I figured, into the rear bumper of another one. This caused the driver’s wife to drop her groceries and go into all kinds of anguished cries. I happened to be there at the time and got so emotional about it I slipped and fell. I was trying to avoid an extraâ€"large snowflake and just about did my left knee in. Thought that might buoy your spirits‘ especially after Saturday’s snowfall which caused a near panic in the parking lot of a local shopping centre. Something to rejoice about in a post-Thanksgiving “turkey†of a summer season: According to my calculations there are only 159 days to go ’til Spring. Dynes feast on Thunderbirds Jean Gourlay ...scores goal Spring's coming By Fred Simpaon Greg Bogaerts . . . two goals It also seems our Canadian flag caused some comment when it was raised. Some enlightened souls wondered if it had anything to do with the Red Cross. Oh well, just 159 days to Spring. Something like that, anyway. Remember, I said it first. There were 23 teams entered. Texas won the final game by three runs during a heavy rainstorm. Can’t get away from that rain this season. 7 They won the second place trophy for Canada. Each player also received binoculars and a red wind jacket. Also with the team were Les Downing, Dave Day and Gary Weston. That’s right. They did all right too (the team, that is) behind the strong right arm of Bob Domik, ex Dynes- pitcher. Well knowns local softball en- thusiast Sadie Brent and friends Mindy Weston and Dorothy Price, accompanied the Toronto Globals to Cheyenne Park in Las Vegas, Nevada. recently for a ball tour- nament. Las Vegas ho One final softball note before we get out the shovels: A few short seasons ago a series between Richmond Hill and Newmarket would have had the fans hanging from the top bleachers. But times change. Maybe no one cares anymore. To my mind if you want to get the fans coming out you’ve got to make that final championships more of a big deal. Weather or no weather. This series started out to be a best- of-five. It was changed to a best-0f- three when the first game was fogged out. Then, bang, bang, it was over. You still couldn't help but get the feeling everyone wanted to get the ball season over. Witness the demise of the Richmond Hill Dynes Jewellers. Bah, Dynes They lost the Beaches Major Fastball League championship to Newmarket Chubb Security in two straight games. FRED SIMPSON Ontario took the lead in Sunday’s match on Sheila Forshaw’s goal early in the first half and succeeded in conâ€" taining the Alberta girls for much of the game. Ontario had earlier won two games by edging Manitoba 1-0 on a goal by Forshawl Alberta needed two goals in the last four minutes of the game to take its first official national title. Then it was Thornhill’s Gourlay getting one of the goals as Ontario downed Newfoundland 4-0. Nineteen-year-old Jean Gourlay of Thornhill and 21-year-old Pat Lohman of Richmond Hill were members of the Ontario team. Jean played fullback and Pat was goalie. SCARBORO â€" Alberta defeated Ontario 2-1 Sunday at Sunnybrook Park to win the Canadian women’s field hockev championship. Highest scorer on the Jewellers’ team -â€" although not in an enviable way â€" was winger Dave Stuart who drew 18 minutes in penalties in one outburst plus a game misconduct and also an automatic two-game suspension. Leading the winner‘s offensive was defenceman Greg Bogaerts with two goals and an assist with Jim Clement following with a goal and an assist and single goals by Steve Sherman and Mike Carnevale. The Jewellers were never in real trouble after taking a 3-1 first period lead although Thornhill narrowed the gap to 4-2 at one point in the second. Hall steady Dynes' goalie, Joe Hall, came up with a steady effort in the nets and was there when the occasion called for it. It seems he objected to the referee‘s decision to give him a 10â€"minute misconduct. Monday night’s 62encounter at Bond Lake Arena was marred by an endless parade of penalties â€" although the game itself wasn’t an expecially rough one â€" and turned play at times into roadâ€"hockey proportions. Four straight It was the Jewellers’ fourth straight win in the early going and the Thun- derbirds’ third straight loss after winning their opener. Penalties galore The Thunderbirds, who took something like 26 minutes in penalties to Richmond Hill’s 13 minutes in the final 20 minutes, never could mount an organized offensive against the determined and well-balanced Ridges team. Neal Crockford chipped in with two Wexford n/ps Rams RICHMOND HILL â€" Making mistakes is part of the Iota coach has to live with when he has a young club on his hands. Richmond Hill Rams‘ coach Carl Brimblecombe doesn‘t mind. “Sure, we’re going to lose games with mistakes." he said following Tuesday RICHMOND HILL â€" Two Richmond Hill Minor Soccer Association players â€" Graham Hobbs and Albert Del Fabro â€" have made their mark in soccer circles this season. They were chosen to play on the Central Region team in the qualifying rounds for the provincial cham- pionship. 7 The _Central Region consists of Toronto, Newmarket, Oshawa and Peterboro districts. First loss Lose steam This took a lot of steam out of the Thunderbirds despite Rocky Pan- talone‘s score from Mark Steele to make it 4-2. Thornhill's other goal was scored by Steve Johnson from Kerry Pimm. Thornhill‘s a‘ssistant coach Stan Hotchkiss felt the two short-handed goals by Oak Ridges “really flattened us out. Reston got the first Oak Ridges Shorthanded goal with only four seconds remaining in the first period to make it 3-1 and Steve Sherman got another one in the second to up the score to 4-1. assists and played a steady game all night with other assists going to newcomer Rob Webb and Stuart. 2 Shorthanded goals The Thunderbirds even had trouble when Oak Ridges got the penalties giving up two goals while at a man advantage and also one on an Oak Ridges power play. He added that “we're not discouraged. This is a young team and we’ll bounce back." Last Friday night‘s loss in Thornhill saw Oak Ridges on t0p of the Thun- derbirds through most of the game. Trail 4â€"1 Richmond Hill trailed 4-1 at one point in the game but fought back to tie the game and then lead it before the Raiders scored the equalizer and winner.
