Nothing will bring Markham Fair back Dear editor: In a world of inflation, poor government. over crowded schools. high interest rates, controlled wages and record high profits for large corporations, we live in a sad society. Juvenile impulse too strong Dear editor: Your recent coverage Of York County board of education problems is to be commended because public opinion may well become the means of solving them. However, I must point out a discrepancy between fact and a statement made in that story. I am quoted as saying the mayor of Markham, Tony Roman, offered financial backing but that the offer had been turned down. In fact, Iwas asked if Mr. Roman was a financial backer of the enterprise. I answered, “No, and if he had offered financial support, it Would have been turned down." I hope this explanation will clarify an otherwise excellent story and will serve as a public apology for any embarrassment caused to Mr. Roman. WILLIAM WILLIAMS, Editor, The North Star. Thank you sociefy fdr taking away, but thank you even more for what’s to come. Over 2,900 people have told this town they don't want this property to be zoned residential. The town council (whose job it is to represent the people) have decided they know better and have put this intended change of rezoning in the official tOWn plan. - Dr. Jack Luftman, bless him. led a small group of us to save this property. But we were opposed by all of town council as well as the editor of The Economist and Sun. 7 Wehave worked hard to do something we feel the town people believe in. That is to stop a development from coming onto this site. > 7 lirfault ourvtown council and mayor. But the ‘do your own thing’ attitude produced enough new problems that public opinion started to return toward standards of conduct and standards of achievement at least five years ago. Everyone, not just teachers, sets examples. To the extent that this (or any) situation requires self- restraint, everyone has an opportunity and a responsibility to show such an example. p u. When the board sought public comment on its program of juvenile peer group decision making last month, it got a firm mandate for change: The message was that teachers should teach â€" using positive guidelines and perspnal example. The staff director of research had already reported the dilemma discussion approach “may be no more effective than traditional methods." Other research has reminded us juvenile impulse is too strong for juvenile reasoning and needs the moderation of either experience of consequences or education. _ -vrvn, Our vsiéi‘s'niéy wish to separate thé issue from its superficial distractions. Now it should be possible to make useful ad- justments without getting ‘uptight‘ â€" or getting others ‘uptight’. A 400~pound plus gorilla is not the safest animal to have around. As a Thornhill resident, I find the recent story about the gorilla very appalling. -Disgust, however, turned to fear as I realized this sick person (the owner, not the animal) is one of our neighbors. True, there are reports there was a cage built into the garage. But the owner also boasts about having the gorilla toilet trained and trained to eat at the table. What toilet and what table? Did she live with the gorilla or did she move this beast back and forth into the house?
