Hill Rams keep bouncing back RICHMOND HILL â€"â€" The Richmond Hill Provincial Junior A Rams shook off a 6-4 loss to Newmarket Flyers here last week to reel off two big wins in a row. Lots of spirit The spirited youthful locals found a solution in both wins as they tightened up defensively to cut down on give aways in their own zone which had been leaving the goalkeeper at the mercy of opposing snipers. "i‘he rvesultâ€" was two solid all-round performances which produced wins on both occasions. They downed the highly touted Ajax Merchants 4-2 Thursday night and then followed with a 5-3 verdict over Weston Dodgers the following night at Chesswood Arena. It took some rebounding because the Rams were shaking their heads over losing to the Newmarket squad despite out-shooting them 49 to 29 and out- playing them by a wide territorial margin. Oak Ridges Dynes Jeweller goalie Doug Brumwell shows the style here that kept the Midland The voice on the phone launched the conversation by stating that “my son was one of the ‘idiots‘ you referred to in your column last week." Deep breath I took a deep breath. prepared for a wintry blast which didn‘t come. Instead she explained her son was one of three who owned up to par- ticipating in some of the vandalism and added that two of the three later helped pay for the damages. The father of the third one, apparently, refused to. This is one of those bits and pieces weekly efforts which accurately reflects my state of me. All bits and pieces and not necessarily in that order. Oh nothing happened of a spec- tacular nature. Unless you’d count my staying alive as not being among the natural order of things. Just a blah type of typical late- 0ctober weather with nothing to look forward to but six feet of snow one of these times. There I go again. Being pessimistic. It‘s just that I have all these terrible decisions to make this time of year. For example, I wavered all weekend deciding whether I should go out and buy toe-rubbers or snow tires. Then there‘s my good winter coat which I‘ve been toting around in the back of my car all summer. Was determined to take it to the cleaners. Do it tomorrow Everytime I planned to do it the weather turned out nice so I waited awhile. It’s still in the back of the car. However, it won't snow for awhile will it? I’ll do it all tomorrow. Let's see, what have I got here. Vandalism I don‘t believe in hammering a subject to death but there are some loose things hanging about re last week‘s column on vandalism at the Richmond Hill Arena. Had an interesting telephone call from a mother of one of the youngsters who had participated in the “dressing room“ episode last year which saw a partition torn apart and stuffed in the toilet bowl, etc, etc. What to do? I need. both but more than one thing on my mind fatigues me. For financial reasons [opted for the toe rubbers but after a few trips to the refrigerator turned that down also. Thé mood I was in would make it a waste. I‘d just lose them like I did last year. Brumwell to rescue Fal/ fever Outshoot Weston Friday‘s game against Weston saw the Rams outshoot the opposition 53-40 in a wide-open encounter. The Rams still managed to play well defensively ably backed by the solid goaltending of Brian Stankiewicz. Empty net Olds’ goal, incidentally, was scored on an empty net with 21 seconds remaining in the game. Assists went to Ron Smulders and Stephenson. Others went to Dave Baker and Mike Walker. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of the first period with the Rams moving into a 4-2 lead going into the final 20 minutes. Ken Paraskevin led the point parade for the Rams with a goal and two assists. Bill Colville, a Thornhill product, chipped in with two assists. The other Richmond Hill goals were evenly divided between Danny Jones (who also drew an assist), Frank Nigro. Bill Stephenson and John Olds. I don‘t believe anyone should stand condemned forever for a stupid or foolish act when he acknowledges his guilt and ex- presses genuine regret. God knows, I shudder to think of some of the stupid things I have done which, in a way. were much more serious than vandalism. And, of course, for every youngster who does do an act of vandalism there are many more that go about their quiet way. Goes without saying although maybe it shouldn’t. This mother said they made him go out and get a part-time job and pay back the cost of damages. She added he realized his wrong-doing, was sorry for it, and was “happy to pay his debt to society.†In summation, a happy note on a rather deplorable situation. Now I feel better. I hate being entirely negative on any issue. I‘ll just conclude by thanking the unknown woman for her phone call. Here and there Some more bits and pieces here: Word has filtered down to me that an ex-Dynes Jeweller fastball pitcher, Wally Dick. had himself quite a season in the Ontario Fastball League. You‘re Welcome to drop around and nut‘your‘x down. This mother also claimed the coaches of this particular team were in the dressing room at the time but that‘s here nor there. They ap- parently said they weren’t and let’s hope it was so. Wally, tossing for Hamilton. was named the most valuable player in regular league play for 1976 and also the mvp during the recently com- pleted playoffs as well. El Smoko The above information, by the way, comes from league secretary, Art “El Smoko" Smoke who used to live in Richmond Hill before his sudden demise. He was rein- carnated, so to speak. somewhere in Willowdale where he is now reported to be doing well considering his age. Condemned jPholo by Hogs: Jewellers swamp Midland Thunderbirds cool heels Stankiewicz stars Goalie Stankiewicz was a standout early in the third period when the Rams ran into a rash of penalties and Ajax stormed to the attack. The Dynes Jewellers made it eight straight games in a row Monday night without a defeat as they poured the coals to Midland in the third period to turn a 3-1 game into an 8-1 rout. All alone The win left the Jewellers all by their lonesome in first place with a sub- stantial lead over the milling teams below them. The Rams dominated play for two periods against Ajax and were unlucky to go into the final period with just a 2-2 tie. OAK RIDGES â€" Any day now there might be a rallying cry starting up around the Mid-Ontario Junior B hockey circle. It cbuld go something like, “Stop the Dynes! " He came to the fore with several brilliant saves to hold the Rams in the game. Then it was Richmond Hill making a spurt just past the midway mark of the period grabbing two decisive goals. Nigro got the winner at 10:38 from Stephenson and Baker; and Mike Gallaugher wrapped it up at 13:26 from Walker and Jones. “We were slow starting because of the week layoff we had,“ observed coach Pete Artemchuk. “We got it together in the last 20 minutes." Turning point Big turning point came in the game with the score 2-1 for the Jewellers with only 33 seconds remaining in the first period. Oak Ridges' Neil Crockford fell in from of a hard Midland drive in front of his net, got the puck up to a quick- breaking Stuart and he sailed in alone Outshoot Ajax The Rams outshot Ajax 45â€"42 but had to come up with some tough defensive play to hold the homesters off in the dying minutes. For Ajax it was Ken Clark scoring both goals. A combination of good defensive clearing and more brilliant Stankiewicz saves was the order of the day. Uggh What can you say about the game Tuesday night of last week against Newmarket‘? Especially after coming off an imâ€" pressive 7-3 win over Orillia 'I‘ravelways. Other than the lay-off, Beer is reasonably pleased with the shape his lineup is taking by way of some new faces drifting in. New face The latest acquisition is goalie Ed Takanatsu who is fresh from last year‘s TMHL North York Rangers Beer- coached midget squad that won the Richmond Hill International Tour- nament, The first two periods saw the Rams nearly butting the Flyers out of the rink as they swarmed all over them firing 23 shots to 5 and 18 to 10 respectively. THORNHILL'â€" No one likes to be let: cooling their heels and that just about sums up the feeling of Thomhill Thunderbirds' Mid-Ontario Junior B coach Ralph Beer. Thanks to a quirk in the schedule. the Thunderbirds have been forced into an 11-day holiday from hockey warfare and that bothers Beer. But tha't was Monday night of last week and the Birds haven‘t played since. “Every team has to contend with this," observed Beer, â€but you don’t like it. We’re practicing regularly but there’s nothing like game action to keep you sharp.“ It was Takatsu who skated off with the most valuable player award of the tournament. However, an inability to but the puck He’s quick ‘He’s what we wanted and now we Gallaugher puts it in Steve Sherman . . . leads league with Newmarket Flyers. Caught with his pads down here is goalie Brian Budarick who was sensational otherwise. This goal He was referring to a clear-cut Midland breakaway that saw goalie Doug Brumwell come up with a superlative save. One of a number he made throughout the game. Roffey scores It was left up to Dale Roffey to put the game away for sure with 10 minutes left in the game and his team playing Shorthanded. to deke the goalie and put it home. Brumwell saves "That broke the Midland attack right there." said Artemchuk. “That and a save by goalie early in the third period." He stole the puck from the Midland defence, went in alone, and pulled the old deke. Bingo. One of the two goals by Boyd Young also came with the Jeweller‘s shor- thanded while Sherman scored his on a power play‘ set in the nets. He’ll make sure our number one goalie, Dean Dorsey, is at his best at all times. Ed is very quick in the nets and I‘m high on him.†How about Howson And Beer, quite naturally, is elated over the play of Thomhill product and rookie Scott Howson who has done quite well so far. Like being second top scorer in the league behind Oak Ridges’ Dynes Jeweller Steve Sherman. Sherman has 19 points off seven goals and 13 assists while Howson has 14 points off 10 goals and 4 assists. And Ernie Beer has Howson paired with Bruce Clatworthy and rugged Ernie Takeuchi. ' “Takeuchi always makes his presence felt and he adds ruggedness and experience to that line. It’s a good one,“ said Beer. Rumor has it that the defenceman he wants is on the way and will be a familiar face â€" and a popular one â€" to Thomhill fans. Beer figures he might be one or two players away from a set line-up and is particularly in the market for one more defenceman. Comingup The birds get back into real-live action next Friday night in Barrie against the Colts and are at home to Owen Sound the following night at Thornhill Community Centre. The third period was a different story as the Flyers came on to outscore the Rams three goals to one to take it away. in the net plus some solid goalkeeping by Newmarket’s Brian Budarick prevented the Rams from running up a score. The Rams and Flyers were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and 3-3 going into the final 20 minutes. We have seven of the top 10 scorers right now.“ Sherman leads Leading the entire pack is Steve Sherman with seven goals and 13 assists. Sherman is a Maple youth. Artemchuk admits to being con- cerned about the game because “Orillia has really come on lately." The Jeweller‘s are off till they meet Orillia next Monday night at Bond Lake Arena. One of his goals saw him drilling a slap shot that was invisible to the naked eye. Artemchuk doesn‘t expect to win every game but he‘s not worried about a (991 collapse. Artemchuk was happy with the play of newcomer Boyd Young who played with the Collingwood Blues last season. Frank Nigro Dave Baker Bin Stephenson Danny Jones Mike Walker Ken Paraskewn Bill Colville Mike GalIaugher Ron Smulders Baker picked up three assists with singles going to Gallaugher, Colville.
