Garbage contract bid uncertain Commencement It is that time of year when York County‘s most recent crop of high school graduates return for one more sometimes nostalgic and. for a few, traumatic look at their old stomping grounds. their high school. Some will be glad to close the doors on this part of adolescence and others may never know the same happiness again. Last weekend, many came back as Thornhill Secondary School in Thornhill and Bayview Secondary School in Richmond Hill held their annual commencement exercises. “High school is a place to vent your abilities" says Scott Duncan of Arnold Street in Thornhill, valedictorian at Friday evening‘s exercises at Thornhill Secondary. The first year engineering student at the University of Toronto was one of five grade 13 students nominated last spring by the other grade 13 students. When asked what message he was hoping to impart in his valedictory speech he said “the only thing I‘m trying to get across is how much fun high school can be if you want to enjoy it. If you participate and want to get involved it becomes a place of en- joyment and not just a place to read text books." 19-year-old Scott said that the structured school system is “far superior“ to the open school, but he later admitted that this depends on the student himself. MAPLE â€"â€" Four garbage contractors will have to wait a while longer to find out who will be making collections in Thornhill (Vaughan) and Woodbridge. The Headmaster’s trophy, which is traditionally awarded by the principal to one of the top all round grade 12 students of last year went to Brad Bean. The current contractor, Markham Sand and Gravel, was outbid by the American-owned York Sanitation Ltd. Engineer Richard Kraft said York Sanitation had clearly the lowest bid. Bruce Quinn, who is presently at- tending the University of Guelph was the winner of the General Proficiency Award given to the top grade 13 student of last year. With an average of over 90 per cent he was one of 15 Ontario Scholars the school had last year. Over 250 students took pai‘t in the ceremonies.
