And “blue” it was. ~Our Skatathon has come and gone and I regret to say it literally bombed out. In postmorteming the whole situation it is very difficult to find out just what went wrong. It is also impossible to attach any fault in any one direction. But fail we did! When a team has only four members out on the ice â€" that‘s four out of 15 ~â€" there really is something lacking This happened in many cases and it is most disturbing. Skatathon falls ’flat’ The whole concept of the Skatathon was to raise money to subsidize our very low registration rates. The low rates â€" and they are the lowest around â€" was to enable more kids to take part in what is fast becoming a very ex- pensive sport. The Richmond Hill Legion Branch 375 Midgets dropped their season opener to Barrie by 3-1 in a penalty filled, Chippy contest. Failure Our failure to raise the required sum means either of two actions must be followed. One is to continue with another major fund raising effort. Raise fees? The second is to raise registration fees next year to $55 or $60 in House League and $95 for Town Teams. This I abhor and don‘t really want to consider. but it could happen. Barrie jumped into a 2-0 lead taking advantage of Legion penalties which saw them assessed eight minors to three for Barrie. The second period saw little improvement as the Legion killed off six minors and three majors Penalty parade A typical scene is being enacted here as Richvale Royals’ goalie Billy Keats kicks to save in a practice Sunday at the RICHMOND HILL â€" The Richmond Hill Tournaments Inc., Minor Bantams skated to a 7-3 victory over Orillia Sunday in their home opener. RICHMOND HILL â€" Legion midgets lose 6-3 By Bob Reeves Boswell The same Richvale team downed Oak Ridges 5-1 in an exhibition game with Boswell leading the way with two goals followed by singles by E. Iafano. T. Boswell, and Paul Durigon. Assists to Mettel, T. Boswell, A. Evelyn and Wolfenden. The same Richvale team nipped Sharon 2-1 Oct. 28 with A. Evelyn and Durigon doing the compared to three minors for Barrie. Justice prevailed in the third as Barrie walked into five minors to Rich- mond Hill's two with the result Richmond Hill controlled the play. Richmond Hill‘s Steve Bowers cut the lead to 2-l scoring at 11 :52 from Pete Halliday. Richmond Hill had numerous scoring chances with the puck appearing to go in on two occasions but apparently unseen by the officials. The play was closer than the final score in- dicated as Richmond Hill saw a two-goal first period margin dwindle to a goal difference at one point in the second frame. November 3. 1976 A player who has paid $40 registration has really only paid for one hour of ice time. If there are 13 or 14 other players on his team this takes care of only 10 weeks of play at the outside Costly Where does the balance come from? And then pro rate to a group who pays $20 or $25 registration and the facts of life become very clear and it becomes most apparent why it was a “Blue Saturday.” So we will be doing something else and just what form it takes only time will tell. On a more positive note, I'd like to thank all the members of the Ladies Auxiliary for their fine effort and all the kids who did skate and who worked so hard in their pledges. You all did a fine job. Bazaar Now on to other things. Our ladies are now very busy preparing for their second annual bazaar scheduled for Nov. 27. I am sure you all recall what a fine success it was last year and it should be even better this year. There will be lots more publicity coming up so keep your eye on “The Liberal" and Channel 10 because this is one of the year's social highlights in Richmond Hill. Peewee tourney Christmas is fast approaching and along with all the other Xmas goodies is our Peewee tournament. He shoots he??? scoring in that order with assists to Ruitenbeer and Evelyn‘ The Richvale boys kept rolling Oct. 29 with a 5-2 win over Bradford but it wasn‘t all that easy. 2-2 Tie It was a 2-2 tie with only a minute to go when Rich- vale pumped three fast ones home. Mike Brooks led the way with two goals and singles to S. Boswell, J. Barrie completed the scoring after Steve Shadoff blocked a hard drive from the point only to have the loose puck poked in. Steve Shadoff played an excellent game in net for Richmond Hill. With this in mind we are trying to encourage as many teams as possible to take part from towns and cities that are close to the Hill. They may very well be a strong contender in their own tournament. Being the 10th an~ niversary of the Legion tournament there is every effort being made to make it a big, big year. Marsh Amos is chairing the group and it was good to see him looking so well after a rather lengthy stint in hospital. As you know, Branch 375 has been a great supporter of minor hockey over the years and this year is no ex- ception. Yea Legion Once again they are sponsoring our Midget A club and Tournaments Incorporated our Minor Bantams. Their constant support is much ap- preciated by us. I’ll be writing much more about both tournaments in the weeks to come because both will merit your attendance. And that‘s it for this week. Sorry about all the negativism but those are the financial facts of life and must be considered.
