November 10. 1976 RICHMOND HILL â€" If someone would ask me to portray the perfect hunting scene, I would take a young boy, give him a gun, and have him walk through a cedar swamp with his best hunting partner, a beagle. I know of hunters who are so hooked on rabbit hunting -with a hound, and I must confess, I am one of them, they forget to shoot the rabbit once they hear the music of the chase. Rabbit hunting is, no doubt, the cheapest and best fun any hunter can have in Ontario. The season lasts until the end of February in most areas with some of them permitting hunting well into June. Cottontail The Cottontail rabbit is by far the most‘ popular of all the game. Inhabiting farmlands, they provide much sport but are considered a pest by most crop-raising farmers. Four to seven young are born thirty days after mating and this can happen four or five times a year. Rabbits will run Any rabbits hiding from you will start running as soon as you have stopped for a few seconds, as ap- parently they feel that at this point, you have discovered their hiding place. We should also remember that a cottontail on the run has a very limited territory and will always return to its own hole or hiding place. If you hunt with a dog, don‘t move from the area where you first started the rabbit and it will It’s easy to understand why they can withstand hunting pressure! They particularly like farmland that has bushy areas nearby. Having good cover there, they live in a burrow usually previously occupied by a groundhog. During the day, these little rabbits will hide in the grass. under shrubbery, and in hollow logs. The expert hunter will literally step on brushpiles, kicking them to move the bunny out into the open. Walk as slowly as you can, then stop frequently. WILL HAVE THEIR ANNUAL Showing nice style, here If pursued by a dog, the Jack can take leaps up to fifteen feet and jump a five foot wall easily. It makes excellent eating, especially if cooked in wine. One must be quick, as we don’t get too many shots at this animal who can cover counties in no time. As I said before, the season lasts at least until the end of February. There is a limit of six for Cottontails and Jack Rabbits, but no limit for Snowshoes. As you can eat only one at a time, I would ask you to again take a look at the boy with his dog on their first hunt. and make sure you leave one for him and his Beagle. | Alex Eberspaecher return long before your dog will. Jack Rabbit Jack Rabbits, the true European hare, is an animal of the wide open farms. The largest rabbit, it can weigh as much as thirteen pounds and live up to ten years. This fellow is hunted mostly by walking over farms and fence rows. Open'water does 36: present much problem for any of the aforemen- tioned animals. Once we had a Jack coynegfed on a bridge. It dived into the water ten feet below without even looking back, and believe me, he could swim almost as fast as he could run. It frequents heavy bush in and around swamps, from central Ontario to the Tree Line. Quite often we find Snowshoes in areas used for bedding and resting places for deer. Running at 30 miles per hour, it is quite a sporting animal, especially if we cgnsider its; stomping grounds. Snowshoe Finally we come to the Varying Hare or Snowshoe Rabbit. As the name implies, this rabbit can change color from a deep brown to a snow white in winter.
