I‘m talking about the scene that always hits the Royal York during Grey Cup Weekend. People just aren‘t normal for these occaasions. It's been four or five years since I drove down to the Royal York to catch the excitement. It won‘t happen again. Forget football There are more orderly hap- penings in wars or prison riots than at the Royal York. Never mind the football game itself. Flying mattress The last time I was there I almost got hit by a flying mattress thrown from an upper storey window at the York, had to dodge a couple of bottles from the same area, and almost got punched out by 3 Midget. That happened in the lobby of the Royal York. He got incensed because I stepped on him in the congestion and swung a roundhouse right at me. He connected too, and my knee-cap was ringing for hours. Meet Dynes This set up a natural head-to-head confrontation with the front-running Oak Ridges Dynes Jewellers next Monday night at Thomhil] Community Centre at 8 pm. Not necessarily because they called the game with their eyes shut. They weren‘t even there for the start. The original officials failed to show and the game was delayed for over an hour while a frantic Thunderbird management searched for some replacements. THORNHILL â€" For awhile Monday night it looked like the referee and linesmen were “really†going to miss a good game between the Thornhill Tbunderbirds and Orillia here. The Jewellers â€" playing without five regulars â€"â€" came with an ace of tying the same team in Barrie last Friday but ended up the short end of a 4-3 score. Happy ending It all turned out all right as the Thunderbirds went on to whip Orillia 6- 4 for the second successive time and move into undisputed possession of second place in the Mid-Ontario Junior B hockey league. OAK RIDGES â€"â€" Rusty Cochrane fired home two goals as the Oak Ridges Dynes Jewellers avenged an earlier defeat by downing Barrie Colts 7-5 Monday night. The Colts' Bob Coulson got the winner with two minutes and 15 seconds remaining on a shot that bounced off the cross bar and behind goalie Doug Brumwell. There was no such happenings Monday night as the Jewellers were in control of the fast-skating game most of the way. Regulars back “We had all our regulars back except for Jim Clement,“ said coach Pete They had ezirlier decisioned the same team by 5-3 in Orillia Saturday night. D ynes still in ï¬rst as split with Colts Doug Brumwell ...hot night coupled with a 5-3 win over the same team on Saturday, moved into undisputed possession of first place. The Birds, as mentioned, play host to Oak Ridges next Monday. Next Friday night they are in Midland and the following Sunday at Barrie. Power play It was Wally Stankov capitalizing on another power play at 1:25 from Greg Chappell and Dave Courtemanche followed by Bud Shirley at 4:05 from Rocky Pantalone and Mike Johns. Orillia‘s George Lockhard got one back but then it was Glen Daurio scoring at 16:30 from Courtemanche and Rob Young. The final session saw both teams exchange goals with Orillia‘s Rocky Clark scoring at 4:49 and Thomhill’s Mike Johns rounding it out at 12:18 from Kerry Pim and Stankov. Thornhili outshot Orillia 37-25 on the game with Ed Takamatsu in the twines for the locals. Rough period The final period was a rough one with Thomhill‘s Ernie Takeuchi indulging in fisticuffs with Gord Chamberlain; and Greg Chappell with John Waters. Coach Beer was elated with the play of the Stankov, Courtemanche and Glen Daurio line as well as with Bud Shirley and Scott Howson “who keeps picking up those assists." Down Orillia 5-3 The game in Orillia saw Thornhill goals by Stankov, Courtemanche, Bud Shirley, two, and Bruce Clatworthy. Thoi‘nhill outshot the opposition by 36- 31 with Ed Takamatsu in the twines in a clean, end to end type of game: Artemchuk who was in high praise of the Oak Ridges juveniles' who had replaced the suspended players for the previous two games. Power play Dynes finished their scoring in the third on a power play goal by Rob Webb and another goal by Reston with Barrie also scoring two. But it was the game in Barrie that gladdened the heart of coach Artem- chuk even though it was a losing effort. Almostatie “We almost had a tie,†said Artemchuk. “Those replacements played great hockey.“ ‘ r “Those†were Oak Ridges’ Juveniles Shawn Parker, Glen Wright and Bruce Wilton. Smith also got one of the goals with the others going to Steve Sherman on a breakaway while his team was two players short; and yet another by Sherman. Brumwell sharp Coach Artemchuk said that goalie “Brumwell came up with a fantastic game despite the fact we lost." He added that Barrie has “strengthened by way of four ad- ditional players and they‘ll be tough the rest of the way. They’ll all be tough from here on in." The Jewellers are at Thomhill next Monday and are at home to Orillia the following Monday at 7:30. Despite the early season spluttering. “We're maybe one or two players away from making ourselves hear," he said following Sunday night‘s loss at the hands of the third place North Bay Trappers in North Bay. This loss followed Tuesday night of last week‘s 8-2 win over the cellar- dwelling Dixie Beehives. Rough game “It was a rough one in North Bay," acknowledged Brimblecombe “But it‘s always rough there with that crowd behind them. We got off to a bad start and that was it." and that was it.†The Trappers pulled into a 3-0 lead with the already Shorthanded Rams playing with one or two men in the penalty box most of the first period. _ All ihree goals by Louis Boudreau, Jim Fox, and Bryan Maille came off power plays. Rams unhappy The Rams were unhappy with the penalty calls against them and, especially, the ones not called against North Bay. Their third goal was scored with Rams' goalkeeper Brian Stankiewicz being held by a Trapper outside his crease while Maille lofted the puck into the wide open net. Bounce back The Rams bounced back with two goals in six minutes in the second period on goals by Frank Nigro and Danny Jones and threatened to tie the game. Roof topples That’s when the roof toppled on the Rams. The Trapper‘s rapped up the game with three goals in 47 seconds courtesy of Chris Milne, Tom Diggles, and Jim Fox. However, the Trappers held on while playing Shorthanded and eventually went ahead by 4-2 on Jean LeBoeux’s goal. The Rams had the edge in the third period but could only score once with Jones scoring his second goal of the game from Mitch Edwards and Greg Hampton. But it was North Bay‘s Jim Fox closing out the scoring at 15:10. Penalties galore A total of 190 minutes in penalties were including six game misconducts, three to each team plus a match penalty to North Bay’s Ron Fortier who molested the referee by throwing an elbow pad at him. The Rams drew 97 minutes, the Trappers 93. Coach Brimblecombe noted that “we’ve only got 17 players signed and one didn‘t show up Sunday so we were handicapped to start with." Sign Kimble One bright note was the signing of Larry Kimble, who played with the Rams, who “should add some muscle to our forwards." Trouble was Sunday that Larry was one of the Rams bounced from the game for indulging in two fights. Help coming? Brimblecombe added that “we still have an affiliation with the Major A Peterboro Petes and we’re still waiting for a couple of players. But they’ve Vice Keitha Matheson looks anything but relaxed as she watches her rock head for pay- Mmmmh, close THE LIBERAL. Wednesday. We've got the talent and we’ll be in the playoffs. Don’t worry about it.†Stanky stars Most outstanding player for the Rams Sunday night was goalie Stankiewicz who faced 62 shots in all and was picked as one of the stars.
