A-6 â€" THE LIBERAL, Wednesday. November 24, 1976 Thin/(s R0 we should replace Sch/e Dear editor: Times have changed here on the Gormley Road. I bought three acres back in 1950. The taxes then were $9.11. Now they are just short of $1,000. The past several winters I have returned home to England as my health couldn‘t stand the climate. I feel I have no rights and am oppressed under Mayor David Schiller. This letter, then, is an appeal to the people of Richmond Hill to go out on Dec. 6 and vote for Gordon Rowe for mayor and save us from destruction by Schiller. Twenty-six years ago when I came to this glorious spot I spent every weekend clearing and giving everything a chance to grow and flourish. Most of my Sarepta House is built of lumber off the property. It is said a country is only as prosperous as the people make it. The three acres here are the only ones that aren‘t divided by a deep ravine. Indeed, the rear portion is more beautiful than the front. As a scientist and conservationist, may I suggest the people who seek to own a property larger than just a subdivision lot, shouldn‘t be allowed a piece greater than what they can maintain. - r..v Dora Strachan Dear editor: I would like to comment on Jim Irving’s column of Nov. 10 in which he states “if he (Education Director) Sam Chapman and Mrs. Zajac and a few others insist all‘s right with education and that the term “basics†be defined in a manner they can fully comprehend. then. . . " First of all, at no time have I ever said “all‘s right with education“. It never has been and it never will be. Education is an evolving process and as such can always be im- proved upon. I believe we will be in deep trouble if we even stop trying. encompass not only skills fundamental to future learning, but also a knowledge and ap- preciation of art. music and the history of our Canadian society. In the past few years French has been added in some of the primary grades. As we live in a bilingual country where bilingual skills are necessary for some employment op- portunities and ad- vancement in certain areas, our students should be given the chance to become bilingual. French then might be considered another “basicâ€. Because of our sedentary society and the necessity of transporting many of our children to school. the need for regular physical education classes in our school system is becoming more obvious. Should physical education be considered a “basicâ€? Alvin Toffler, author of “Future Shock“, believes the most important aspect of learning is “how Letters Need basics defined to cope with change, to master and adapt to a complicated enviorn- ment." To this end. Toffler believes values education is the new “basic†about which schools should be most highly concerned. I don't agree with him entirely. but he has a point. It‘s one which demonstrates that everyone‘s idea of what the “basics†are isn't the same. Because we have ex- pected more and more from the education system (and therefore Candidate in King over the years have added more subjects that were considered im~ portantl less time of necessity was spent teaching “basic skills“. This fact, combined with the permissive programming of the 19605. tended to weaken our student proficiency in such areas as English grammer and spelling. However. parents and educators have now made it abundantly clear they want emphasis placed on teaching these fun- damental subjects. I, for one, don‘t want to go back to the rigid curriculum of the~ 19505. But I am optimistic enough to believe that, with careful planning, we . oppressed citizen proceed with a vision of the future of the town. the province and the country as a whole. We should be grateful to have a man of vision in Gordon Rowe and vote him into office. He will create the jobs and services that are needed in the town. He is a man of the people, for the people, for a great future. Secondly, I would like the term “basics†defined, because to Irving the “basics†may simply be the “three R‘s". But to many others, including Education Minister Tom Wells and Neither should the local council have the power that it has. In my case it‘s meant oppression. For me it's been essential to ask my lawyer to see I am at least able to have some semblance of peace. If I were the only one that has suffered under Schiller, I wouldn't write this letter. But here comes this man seeking only a good living at our expense, devoid of any comprehension of the can provide time for increased emphasis on basic skills. I hope we can do this and still allow ample opportunity for other programs we feel are essential in preparing our not misleading Dear editor: I refer to a letter to the editor from Trustee Margaret Coburn, represen- ting King Township.
