Invited guest Ken McDonald, superinten- dent of area 4, expressed interest in the discussion on functional grammar. He said there was some criticism on the secon- dary school levels “Youngsters are not in all respects comparable to youngsters in the fifties. There is a higher per- centage of kids going to university. It is unfair for a person who was a top student to compare themselves with the same grade in the fifties“. He also said there is no comparison in the level of mathematics. Elementary school is different. There is an interest in creativity and self-fulfilment. He said the3 ‘r‘s should not be the same for every youngster in grade four. McDonald said that there was not enough done for the gifted youngster or one with a learning difficulty. This could be solved by more effective classroom teachers. At the first parent- liaison meeting of the year held at German Mills Public School on Simonston. principal Gordon Maunder asked the parents what they wanted from the school. Some of the answers were: basic knowledge of the 3 ‘r‘s, self-motivation, self-worth, creativity, structural learning, citizenship and group interaction. There was a lengthy discussion about reading and writing; does the student know what he reads? Crowding at Thornlea and Thornhill Secondary schools was also discussed, along with the teaching of values in the classroom. The next parent-liaison meeting will be in January.
