Not that this lake is fished out, merely, the character of Simcoe is changing. It has been changing for a long time, but the symptoms have only become apparent in the last few years. We, with our farming practices and housing developments, have enriched the lake until the aquatic ecosystem is now favoring the warm water fishes rather than the local Lake trout and the Whitefish. There are more warm water fishes such as Perch and Carp as well as Pike in the lake than we ever have had before. What can we do to bring the fishery back? Apparently, some anglers have suggested that Coho Salmon be introduced. Introduce Coho The Coho is an ocean species and a wellâ€"known voracious feeder feeding on other fishes. They grow very fast and therefore need a large foodbase. Has Lake Simcoe such a food base? The Perch and Smelt are plentiful enough, but as the Coho is a cold- water and deep-feeding fish during the summer, it is feared that it would be feeding mostly upon Laketrout and Whitefish. Naturally there is no way the natural fishery would last more than two or three years. Costly program What fishery would we have left except for Coho Salmon? As this fish will not spawn in Lake Simcoe, the costly long range program would be needed every year to get some kind of a fishery going. Not only'w'ould’ the Coho, but for that matter. the Chinook increase the serious reduction of the more Undoubtedly, Lake Ontario and Lake Simcoe are the most important areas of sportfishing for local anglers. As Lake Ontario is in a period of ‘suffering‘ at the present time, Lake Simcoe has had to take the main onslaught of anglers. A ’troubled’ lake Stevens (league trophy) Kevin McMurray. Not replanting, but only centuries of evolution could recreate the perfect strain for Simcoe. To resort to continuous fish planting of truly questionable nature and. in my opinion, a useless fish, would only result in a vicious downhill circle. Each planting in- volving another specie would mean that we are getting further away from the source of the problem, the CHANGING HABITAT. Strict regulations Stricter regulations in the use of agricultural practices are necessary. As we must eat, we can‘t ban the use of farm fertilizers but we could work on better and less harm- ful substances. As far as the real culprit is con- cerned, human and industrial sewage, we should have better enforcement to control them completely. I have heard recently that there are some towns or inâ€" dustries on Simcoe which are still discharging waste into the lake. N0 rumors Unfortunately, rumors do not help, so I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has first-hand knowledge. Not only would this make an important news story, but perhaps then we could do something constructive toward saving the coldwater fishery of Lake Simcoe. There is no reason why Lake Simcoe should turn out like Lake Ontario. Just imagine, if we lose Simcoe, how far we would have to drive for some good fishing. Ridiculous. if you consider that we are supposed to have the best fresh- water fishing on this planet. troilblozeri presents . ..
