The microwave oven has come into today's kitchen with an impact similar to that of the color TV when it first moved into the family room. “It has replaced the dishwasher as the prestige item in the kitchen," says Sylvia Binkley, home economist with Consumers Gas Company on Elgin Mills Road. However, it seems that people buying the “magic” cooking appliance are not finding it quite as easy a machine to tackle as the dishwasher. After all, the function of the dishwasher was quite clear. “People buy a microwave and they find that they don‘t know how to use it“, Mrs. Binkley said, referring to the number of cooking possibilities created by the new microwave technique. The technique is not really new. It was first designed 19 years ago, but it has only come into residential use in the last few years.
