As for Mayor Schiller not getting along with the council, as an occasional visitor to council meetings and as one acquainted with a number of local elected officials. I have seen just the opposite. To paraphrase Miss Strachan‘s letter, this letter is a plea to the people of Richmond Hill to look carefully at the campaign material of both candidates, look at their track records, and decide which man will do the better job for all the citizens of Richmond Hill. Apparently the negative insinuations and carefully phrased attacks of mayoralty candidate Gordon Rowe‘s campaign have infected Miss Strachan. I know the past year‘s tax rate on my 4,000 sq.ft. lot and house aren’t as much increased as they were in the time Mr. Rowe was in office. I would be delighted to have three acres and a house for $1,000 per year taxes, on the Gormley Road. "That is, ,I‘ve seen a good working relationship between the mayor and most of his council. Dear editor: After reading Dora Strachan’s letter in The Liberal yesterday. I feel com- pelled to reply. The choice is either a gentleman who can support his facts with documents which to my knowledge he‘s never Same clique again His attendance at council meetings in wards and the question and answer mggting was_ a great big zerq. His Ettendanée at normal council meetings was considerably lower than Schiller‘s. His comments that municipal government should be eliminated in favor .of regional government was a Letters Had to reply to Strachan Dear editor, Two years ago in Richmond Hill the voters made it abundantly clear they did not want a clique to run our town for US. I find it very interesting that the self same clique â€" with the exception of Stephenson â€" is running once again. Unfortunately, the bearer of their banner, mayoralty candidate Gordon Rowe. has a pretty dismal record to support them. wonderful @Sarld ’ of i music GRAND OPENING Wonderful World of Music ALL 45's 10% ON OPENING DAY ON ALL |..P.'s & TAPES - SATURDAY. Where does that leave the town of Richmond Hill? It very clearly indicates that if Rowe is elected it will leave us represented by a semi»absentee representative whose record shows allowing excessive ex- penditures, a desire to abolish local government, a liking for closed door meetings, no desire to meet and be questioned by the taxpayers and a penchant for building, building, building. (And why not, he sells lumber doesn‘t he?). ,Is this what we want? Let's show him on Dec. 6. GERALD CRACK, 19 Leonard St., Richmond Hill, Ont. (FDR DEC.) Dear editor Miss Dora Strachan‘s letter of last week was brought to my attention and I was asked to comment in my capacity of chairman of the rural land use committee. Then, in the summer of 1974, she asked for a change in the bylaw to permit a severance and was again refused because that would discriminate against her neighbors. The question to us was whether the rules being applied really had merit or was she being restricted unnecessarily. The facts are this lady sought, in 1971, to sever her three acrees into two lots. Severance was refused then because the bylaw did not permit it. Strachan lot facts Good trustee candidate These. residents are concerned enough to exercise our power of nomination. Efic Baker, whom we have persuaded to accept nomination, has been a citizen member of the values education committee of the board during 1975-1976. He has training for, and experience in, big business administration. He has a long and useful record of community service and he has empathy so we commend him to your readers in this election. THOMAS CANNON, 275 Gretel Dr., Richmond Hill, Ont. Garnet Williams is a retired farmer and business man having been Secretary-Treasurer of the Toronto Milk Producers District 9 dealing with farmers, consumers, transporter and distributor. At the. same time he served 14 years on the local Board of Education also acting as Secretary-Treasurer. Since entering the Political field, he has served as Councillor, Deputy-Reeve, and Reeve prior to assuming the office of Mayor. Under his leadership, Vaughan has progressed to the best municipality in Ontario. ‘ He was the pioneer of Vaughan’s Industrial growth which is the envy of most municipalities and it's the financial backbone of the Region of York - the biggest single factor of financing the educa- tion of Vaughan youth. He is a director of York Central Hospital and a past Chairman of the Board of Directors for York Manor. He is a past Director of the Association of Ontario Mayors and Reeves. Garnet Williams has the experience and he pledges that experience to keep Vaughan financially, socially and progressively sound. FOR Sound stable government, balanced assessment, progressive industrial growth, phased residential development, preservation of identity, established historical program, senior citizen housing, expand and promote recreational programs for all age groups. I have the experience. I will and have used unbiased sound judgement I have used a steadying influence on council I feel I have excellent finance ability. I feel that I’m an all-round community man. I solicit your support on December 6th GARNET WILLIAMS FDR MAYOR INDEPENDENT INDUSTRY INTELLIGENCE INTEGRITY GARNET WILLIAMS GARNET WILLIAMS The lady's land is quite attractive â€" but mainly because of the trees. It is part of a sand hill acquifer. which feeds the wells of the whole surrounding community. Our committee studied this area carefully and recommended to council development be limited to low density estate homes (large lots) because of the water need. the erosion hazard and the value of tree cover. Though we sympathize with her disappointment at reduced profit potential, she did not have the right to .erect two homes on one lot and â€" from the dates quoted â€" it is clear she should not We therefore confirm the good judgment of the earlier decisions. We need unity and stability and the ability to negociate and trust in our community. Put your council back in this position. Those who oppose everything - who do not trust - who think negative always â€" they are in a poor state - they must feel insecure. This community was built on trust in your neighbour, and use a common sense attitude towards what happens in this community. People should have input, but evaluating all information and making the final decision should be the job of our council. We elect them, so they should have the interest of the Town of Vaughan, not some local minority groups. Their concerns should be considered - but the final decision should be what is best for Vaughan - not some minority group. There should be no individual or group who should control our council. They have to be individuals, representatives of our community who are ready to stand on their Own merit. Vaughan'is a great place to live â€" so let us share with our friends and neighbours and those who immigrated to Canada and became Canadians. We have to get back to what our fore- fathers' ideals were. We should not ask what Vaughan can do for us - but what we can do for Vaughan. We need new blood, young people to help keep Vaughan alive, so we might have Drama groups, Musical groups, Recreational groups, Senior Citizens activities, Helping the less fortunate such as the handicapped. Development will happen - let us be realistic and-control the size, the population, where it happens, and over arealistlc time period. I believe any devel0pment must have a section set asrde so that Our own young people may buy a lot and build - maybe by their own hands - the way most of us did - wrth darned hard work, and on limited funds in most cases, with our families and friends willing to help. Suggest that you buy a copy of a book which comes out at this time of the year called “The Friendship Book”. Read it and search your conscience I urge every voter to get out and VOTE. It is your right, and I hope you will vote independent candidates. THE LIBERAL. Wednesday.
