Spiel 9 By Ron Taylor RICHMOND HILL â€" If you ever receive an in- vitation to the Newmarket Mr. and Mrs. Spiel don‘t turn it down. This has to be the most fun-filled weekend on the curling circuit thanks to the efforts of the York curling club members under the leadership of Barb and Bob Broadbent. Yours truly with wife Ruth, Mary and Elgin Barrow just returned from there with a prize for ending up somewhere in the second event. This is quite an im- provement over last year’s performance when we won the popular “outhouse” booby prize. Noheat Meanwhile, at our own club, minus heat, but thanks to those who brought their own heaters, the playoffs for the mixed league were completed. John and Audrey Graydon, curling with Allan and Joy Clugston, took top honors but were followed closely by a rink made up of Bill and Blanche Reid, Bob and Joan Taylor. Walt and Norma Lavender, supported by Herb and Pat Thomson, came in third. Somehow Len and Mary Ellen Lee managed to be high one game winner with Bill and Betty Schwan. Make-shift Bob Moore with a shaky make-shift rink of wife Betty, June Bush and Pat Deciantis, won the booby prize. hill curling Curling clergyman Harold Martin. our curling clergyman. after welcoming Jim Lane and Len Lee into his congregation, put on his curling collar and came away with the South Western Ontario Clergy curling championship. Another win which went unnoticed recently was the Beauchinskis‘ runner- up showing at the big Unionville Ferguson spiel. Barrow spiel Last week the annual “Barrow” spiel took place at the club and this year a rink from Mon- treal won first prize. Thanks to all the efforts of those involved especially Marcella Bird and her great efforts with the entertainment, this spiel is becoming very popular and is developing an invitational flavor. Closing spiel The closing spiel takes place in two weeks so sign up now for a new idea in curling. The entertainment somehow remains a mystery but from rumors it should be good. The elimination draw takes place that evening so be sure to purchase your lucky number. The “Barrow” winner from Montreal consisted of Shirley Silverson, Alison Kelly, Ri Bouchard and Mary Mepham. Runner-up from High Park was Enid Beame and her rink of Pearl rea and Peg Neville. Ruth Nicholls‘ Avonlea rink won the event with . Unionville runner-up.
