They're reaching for top Liberals ready for election a year ago “I thoughtl might as well get it over with. so we held the nomination at that time,“ Stong said. Olson and Newton will go after the nomination at a meeting tonight (May 4) at 8 o‘clock at Crosby Arena in Unionville. The Stong nomination meeting came about when the Conservatives threatened an election last spring. While the Progressive-Conservative party may have just set the date for the provincial election â€" June 9 â€" last week. the Liberal party in York centre was ready for it a year ago. At least that’s the time they held the nomination meeting for the riding, in which present member Alf Stong of Richmond Hill, was unopposed. That means Stong will be back contesting the seat against Richmond Hill Councillor Bill Corcoran (who received the PC nomination two weeks ago) and either Christopher Olson or Jim Newton of the NDP. It took just 28 seconds for Stong to be declared, causing Liberal Leader Stuart Smith, who was guest speaker, to remark it was the fastest nomination meeting he’d ever been at. “WeVe been gearing up for it (the election) ever since,” Stong said. Newton, an employee of Metro social services department, lives in Rich- mond Hill. Olsen recently moved to Toronto from ’l‘hornhill. 2 LITRE CARTON The second nomination meeting was made necessary when Roman decided to stick to municipal politics and bowed out of the race. Roman was defeated by Stong when he first ran in 1975. The two candidates in the NDP camp are both from this area. He is an associate professor Ontario Institute for Studies Education. Newton is making his first bid for public office, although he has been active in the trade labor movement and a member of the NDP for 12 years. He said he was approached to run for the nomination and was informed there was no other candidate at that time. Also making his first bid for public office is Chris Olsen“ who moved to Toronto from his 'l‘hornhill residence a month ago to be closer to work. He now finds himself spending most of his time in this area. “That just shows I didn’t have any idea of running until recently,” Olsen told The Liberal. He said he had been working throughout on the election committee of of the NDP executive and riding association in York Centre, and planned to continue to work for it during the election. Both he and his wife, Carole, pursue their own careers â€" she’s a civil ser- vant â€" and Olsen plans to take a leave of absence if he’s successful in getting the nomination. However, after approaching some first-rate prospects, who decided against running, Olsen decided it made a lot of sense for him to do it.
