A couple of weeks earlier the board agreed to commit a maximum of $36,000 of next year's budget to the centre, which is still to be built. Markham‘s Doreen Quirk argued that, if the board didn't sign up right away. York students would be "left out in the cold." By signing up the board would be assured of a maximum of 100 days use All or part of the costs would be recovered by students paying their own way, the board was told. of the facility. which Would house 40 students a day. At its meeting the board approved a recom- mendation asking the staff to work out an agreement with the South Lake Simcoe con- servation authority for use of the centre. By Jim Irving A motion of direction to Craig Cribar, York County board of education chairman. was to be presented to the board at its regular meeting last night (May 24). The meeting took place after The Liberal had gone to press. The motion, which was to be moved by Trustee Bob McMonagle of Markham, and Harry Bowes of Whitchurch- Stouffville‘ called for the chairman to withhold any action regarding Scanlon Creek outdoor education centre near Lake Simcoe, until the board had fully evaluated a similar programs and costs. Last night‘s motion was to have been heard after the presentation of a brief by a group of citizens, headed by Peter Silverman of East Gwillimbury. Silverman was defeated by John Denison of Newmarket in last year‘s elections. In his brief, a copy of which was received by The Liberal beforehand, Silverman argued the board's decision to draw Trustees want outdoor centre plans stopped A-2 â€"â€" THE LIBERAL. Wednesday. Yet the board had used only 12 days of its allocated 21 days so far, and had already can- celled a two-day period in November, because “it was unable to come up with a class.“ He said Trustee Quirk had indicated there was a serious need to sign up, the implication being there were inadequate facilities to meet the demand from schools in York County. up an agreement was based on inadequate data. The “worst thing†of all‘ according to the brief, was the information received from the Metro Toronto Regional Con- servation Authority. It showed there were two “Is the board prepared to spend the entire budget on one facility and forget their financial investment and agreement with Boyd?" Silverman asked. Also, in 1976, the board used only 18 of the 21 days allotted to it at Boyd. Under the terms of the Boyd agreement, can- cellation must be made six weeks in advance, or the board must pay a penalty of 50 per cent of the total charge, he said. “Since we are unable to currently make maximum use of even 21 days at Boyd, logic would dictate that we will be unable to use an ad- ditional 100 days at Scanlon Creek," Silverman said in his brief. 25" CONSOLE proposed MTRCA _ce[)_tre_s in the heart of York County, one at Oak Ridges and the other by the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg. York County board of education chairman, kept the chairman's committee from facing a motion to challenge one of its rulings, The Liberal has learned. According to Liberal sources. the motion was to have been presented at a special meeting, because the committee originally ruled out the appearance of a delegation of ratepayers, headed by Peter Silverman of East Gwillim- bury, last night (May 24). Silverman was to have presented a brief dealing with the board’s recommendation to draw up an agreement with Scanlon Creek outdoor recreational centre. Silverman con- tended the board hadn‘t received adequate information about the centre to allow it to proceed with the agreement. Had the métion gohe through and passed, it would have been tantamount to a vote of non- confidence. The motion to the chairman’s committee would have challenged its ruling not to let the delegation present its brief, and also would have charged Cribar with suppressing in- formation on alternative centres. The motion was withdrawn after the chair man later agreed to let the delegation on.
