Debbie Berger mighty fine tyke Dryw Thompson gained a fourth place trophy for Atom boys (10 to 11 years) in the discus event as a member of the new Tri-Town Track Club of Richmond Hill. This atom championship was the last for Dryw who will advance to bantam competition in 1978. Tough start 18 (12) Competing in their first full scale track meet were Mike Watson, Scott Richardson. and Brian Winch, all of Debbie Berger of Thornhill put on an impressive one-girl show Saturday at the Ontario Mite-Tyke-Atom track and field championships at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke. Debbie, running in the Tyke eight to nine years division, captured second place in the long jump and 100 metres and third place trophy in the 200 metres. Berger was competing with the Scarboro Optimist Track Club and still has a year of Tyke competition in 1978. The competitions attracted over 500 youngsterfls» from across thy: proyincg. “I was quite frankly shocked that no player from either team caught the eye of the scouts,“ said Hot- chkiss. “Especially when you consider both teams finished one- two in the league.†Hotchkiss thbught at least two or three should have received the nod from the Jewellers and “possibly Stan was fresh from attending the annual minor hockey draft when he dropped by the other week. Harold DeGeer And we're just bursting with good news this week. Another area hockey stalwart, goalie Harold DeGeer of Oak Ridges, was a sixth round choice of the Oshawa Generals. Harold. of course. toiled with the Junior B Markham squad this past season along with cousin Chris DeGeer of Richmond Hill. Bad news Now for the bad news. Hotchkiss reports that four players were drafted out of the Mid- Ontario Junior B League but none from either the Thornhill Thun- derbirds or Oak Ridges Dynes Jewellers. Especially after chewing over some rather juicy tidbits about the local scene thanks to the visit of ’I‘hornhill Thunderbirds‘ assistant coach Stan Hotchkiss. Nigro was no less than London Knights‘ first round draft choice and was the 12th player picked over-all. Quite an honor. Nigro, of course, is a Richmond Hill boy. The happy news is that one of the draft choices was Phil Wood of the Richmond Hill Legion Midgets who caught the eye of the Major A Ottawa 67‘s. Highlight of the action (as far as Richmond Hill is concerned) was the hardly surprising picking of the Richmond Hill Rams‘ flashy for- ward Frank Nigro.
