Câ€"IZ â€" THE LIBERAL, Wednesday. June 15, 1977 North York MP and Minister of Defence Barney Danson paused for a moment last week to say hello to Leading Air Cadet Linda Court of Major Mackenzie Drive in Smile for Barney iRviiyn: uhnm Richmond Hill. parade for the squadron 778. Fifty cadets were on annual inspection of Inspector wore grey When former national defence minister Paul Hellyer outfitted the Canadian Armed Services in one green uniform and unified the force some years ago, he failed to include in his legislation the various cadet corps which existed throughout the nation. As a result, he left Canada‘s war veterans with a memento of the past. And thus, on Remembrance Day you may still see khaki army blouses, navy blue bell-bottoms and light blue airâ€"force tunics marching toward a Cenotaph. Without doubt, some nostalgic memories were revived among veterans last Sunday afternoon when the Legion-sponsored, Squadron 778 Royal Canadian Air Cadets paraded in their blues before a crowd of 200 at Legion headquarters in Richmond Hill for annual inspection. Under a blazing sun and a strong wind out of the north, fifty cadets, long short and tall, both male and female, marched smartly past in review to the skirl of bagpipes. They then stood in open order for in- spection by a man in a gray flannel suit. Two days earlier, the man in the flannel suit â€" Defence Minister Barney Danson â€" had been on the floor of the House of Commons praising efforts of airmen in rescuing survivors from the ferry boat. William Carson. On Sunday he was praising the efforts of five-foot, Iourteen-year-old Greg Hardy for carrying the national flag so well against the prevailing wind. Later, the Minister presented a flying scholarship award to Sergeant J. Handbury of the Cadet Corps, and gave a short address in which he said he owed, “a debt of gratitiude“ to parents for supporting sons and daughters in “this worthwhile purpose". “Many of our senior officers started off as cadets,“ he said. “A career in the service is rewarding and holds more security than my own job", he joked. LAC Shepherd received the Ridgley Trophy for most in- teresting hobby â€" but was unable to name it because he has two or three. Cadets Fairbrother, Ratchford, Vigus and White received Warrant Officer commendations on ter- minating their association with the Squadron because of old-age (19). And Mrs. Lynn Court of Branch 375 Legion Ladies‘ accepted the President's Trophy for Rifle Competition. They beat the Squadron by one point. Perfect attendance awards were handed out to LAC. Court; MWO. Fairbrother; Cpl. Fielberg; Cpl. Hamlon: LAC. Inks; Sgt. Classen and Cpl. Baker. Attending dignitaries at the inspection included Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Schiller. Perhaps the most profound statement of the day was made by a gray»haired veteran clad in blue blazer and wearing a Distinguished Flying Cross amid an array of other medals. He was recalling a Sunday some 37 years ago at Biggin Hill, England, when a siren wailed and the PA system shouted, “Scramble”. “That will never happen at Buttonville", he said. - We mean Music on 0 am? heard nothin’ yet! The meeting heard a brief from Mrs. Marion Hohener, president of the Roselawn parent association. She said her group wanted Roselawn to remain a senior public school, covering Grades 6 to 8, and not be converted to a kindergarten to grade 6 school. The lone parent representative, Mary Atkinson, said after the meeting that the brief had not given her any new information. The meeting also saw a bid by Councillor AI Duff; of Richmond Hill â€" another member of the com- mittee â€" to add more parents representation, turned down by a 4â€"3 vote. The committee will meet again June 20 to hear a brief from Hillcrest residents' association, regarding school problems throughout the Richmond Hill area.
