Twenty-seven students across the county earned minimum wage working with the elementary school pupils. The program cost the province $4,800. Both university graduates with their sights set on a teaching career, they even hired the tutors themselves. Joanne’s pay cheque from school and a second job in a Willowdale health foods store is going straight into the bank. A grade 12 student at Thornhill Secondary School, she is planning to go on the school trip to Paris, Spain and North Africa next year.
