Hockey in August? The Rams, comprising 13-year-old Richmond Hill youngsters from town rep and house league teams, chalked up 22 wins, six losses and two ties during the regular schedule. Good enough to finish in first place against seven other Metro Toronto area hockey clubs. So what’s wrong with losing a hockey chamâ€" pionship in August? Nothing. Providing you can come to grips with even playing ice hockey in the summertime. And that’s just what 14 members of the Rich- mond Hill Rams ap- parently managed to accept recently as they completed a 30-game schedule topped off with a two-game total goals-to- count series with the Toronto Sea Hawks. B-2 â€" THE LIBERAL. Wednesday. August 24, 1977 The bad news was the just completed series against the Sea VHaAwks Halfway House _ wms again â€"The Rams lost the first game l~0, the second one 3-0. “My defensive corps decided to go on holidays and that was it,” he said. Sonshine hadn‘t bargained for “summer holidays" when he decided to enter a team in the summer hockey league which plays out of the Centre Ice Arena in Willowdale. “We had only 11 players to the other team's 16," observed Rams’ coach Reg Sonshine. Sonshine figures his boys would have gone all the way except, of course, for summer holidays. “It was a great ex- perience for the youngsters," he said. “It‘s my feeling they don‘t get the competition in their own leagues during the winter. “Playing against top *Metro teams in the summer league should improve their skills for next winter," he said. For Durkin‘s it was Bev Positano, Carol Chapman and Cheryl Bailie homering. Cheryl also played a strong game at shortâ€"stop. Fielding was Brian's strong point led by Cathy Boagie at shortshop and Jennine Majury and Gail Brinkman in the outfield. Standings: Halfway House 20 points (10-2); Brian's Shell, 14 (7â€"5); Durkin's BP 10 (5-7). Raypak Thermonics 6 (3- 9). Halfway House con- tinued its “go allâ€"the way" style of play in Richmond Hill Ladies Recreational Softball League play. The league-leaders walloped Raypak Thermonics 20-11 while Durkin‘s B? were shelling Brian's Shell 23- ll. Halfway House took full advantage of Raypak's six runs brought in via walks plus two errors. The Centre Ice League A save in August has been in operation for five years and it‘s a “pay to play" proposition with Sonshine figuring total costs for entry plus uniforms, sweaters and socks amounted to $1,900. Each player had to pay $115. Sonshine's team comprised goalies Don Fawcett and Steve harris, Dave Leuschner, Don Head, Tony Marinelli, Ben Carbone, Bob Keenan, Steve Mettel, Ralph Coppola, Ken Lennox, Tom Kirisit, Neil Crebbin, Ken Jensen and Mark Ellison.
