High score for a single win went to the Richmond Hill entry of Gary Charity, Ted Mansbridge and Jack Gartlan‘ The Richmond Hill rink of Jim Grainger. Roy Stone and Fraser Gee made the scene for third high with three wins. High for two wins was the rink of Don Carphin of Port Credit. A total of 20 rinks en- tered the tournament with a Burlington entry, skipped by Dave Burrows, taking second high with three wins. Skip of the rink wés John Hull. Close loss One of the most out- standing matches was the Men‘s Doubles in the semi-finals when Mike Bryson and Julian Handbury fought a close match and were defeated 5-7 in the third set. They were competing against players ranked number four in the Men's Open and number three in the A rink from Agincourt was the high three-game winner at the Richmond Hill Lawn Bowling Club‘s Men‘s Trebbles tour- nament last Wednesday. Agincourt wins trebles In the first 20 games played North Central lost only two. Competing with 11 regions from all across Ontario and numbered among 88 competing athletes the North Central Region was still in the running after seven regions had been eliminated. And it was nothing to their discredit they were finally beaten in the semi- finals by the top-seeded North York team. Magnificant stand However. amongst all the memorable hours of the sun-blessed weekend nothing belittles the magnificents stand put up by the North Central Region tennis team representing this area. The tennis events were held at the Waterloo Tennis Club set amongst some of the most beautiful sports parkland I have had the op- portunity to see in Canada. The formal ceremonies, the parade of 3,000 athletes and the lighting of the torch were stirring moments that made the singing of O Canada all the more real and vital. Five thousand people jammed into the main stand of the Centennial Stadium in Kitchener last Friday to watch the opening events surrounding the begin- ning of the Ontario Summer Games. Hill tennis duo just miss medal placed third on the basis of having missed more often at the lower levels of the competition. Runner Fred Robbins and high jumper Debbie Pegg captured third place bronze medals while multi-event competitor Jane Toporowski was kept off the winner’s podium. Tiny Pegg recorded the same height as the second and first place winners in the high jump but was; By ERIC HANDBURY By Bob Thompson Last minute upsets ruined any hopes for Richmond Hill track and field athletes of coming home with some gold medals in last weekend‘s Summer Games at Kit- chener-Waterloo. Robbins wins bronze medal B-2 â€" THE LIBERAL, Wednesday, August 31, 1977 JANE TOPOROWSKI Outlucked Sept. 1 will see the culminating match of the house league. Bill‘s Bullies beat out Vic’s yillains in the semi-finals and the finals will be between the Ruffians and No medals We did not bring home a medal for only a silver and a gold were available in top flight but Richmond Hill's representatives, June Beck and Julian Handbury, can be truly proud of being numbered among an outstanding 1977 team. Playing as well as they did it would be impossible to pick out any above all but Joyce Sneddons‘ win in the semis deserves mention. It lasted two and a half hours. Steve Reesor played a magnificent game in the opening rounds returning a devastating serve with uncanny accuracy and winning with apparent ease. Men’s A Unfortunate During the long, two- day affair Toporowski was unfortunate to have her discus competition and her pentathlon high jump, two of her better disciplines. scheduled for the same starting time, as After four of the five events completed in the Pentathlon, Jane was third in the standings, but her poorest event, the 800 metres, closed the competition and she was displaced from medal ranking in this event. With one throw remaining, Toporowski was third in the discus when the eventual win- ner, Debbie Barker of Oakville. tossed a plus-40 metres effort. Hard-luck girl has to be Jane Toporowski who saw two medals slip away on last moment efforts by other competitors and co- incidental starting times of events in the Pen- tathlon and regular field events. Long lean Fred was still pleased with his first major medal in Ontario competition. Big duel Steeplechase expert Fred Robbins duelled throughout the entire 2,000 metres for second place only losing contact with his opponent in the last 200 yards. Tri-Town running Coach Fred Robbins at 773-5535, or Joe Watson at 773-4284, would ap- preciate hearing from any local runner who is interested in competing. The run-and-jump-andâ€" throw set now go into temporary retirement and leave the field open for the Cross Country competitions which begin in September and run through until the cold afternoons and mornings of December. The central region team, which included our local athletes, easily won the overall track and field championship capturing 14 gold medals to easily out-distance the other regional teams from across the province. Toporowski céme away from Kitchener medal- less but determined to improve her pentathlon efforts in 1978. The high jump positions were decided on the number of misses at lower heights as five girls finished this competition tied for fourth place. This constant scurrying from point A to point B took its toll of energy and Richmond Hill‘s popular athlete had to be satisfied with fourth in the discus, fifth in the shot put. seventh in the pentathlon, and eighth in the high Jump- was the pentathlon long jump, and the regular shot put.
