Jewel/er’s open hockey camp Oak Ridges Dynes Jewellers' goalie Doug Brumwell hopes he won‘t see as many pucks at one time as this during the regular Wasn't it just the other day I murmured something to the effect that I could hardly wait until summer would be here? Or did I just imagine it? Maybe it was 10 years ago I murmured it. Anyway, I guess it's all psychological this getting depressed about summer‘s waning. Someone once told me that whenever she got depressed she just imagined it was a week from now and everything was all right. That was okay for her. She was a flighty type and her depressions only lasted a week. I‘m still working on one that started July 3 at 2:10 p.m., back in 1948. It‘s been going so long I even forget what it was that depressed me. Which brings me around to the past Labor Day Weekend which, of course, just about rings down the summer idyll for another year. I was all right but my 1971 “Maverick” spent it in labour. Giving birth to a foal or something. It's quite a beast. It‘s been in the garage three times in the last 48 hours. Things are looking up though. The first couple of times it only went three blocks after getting out. The third time it went four-and-a-half. I must have the only car that would break down before it got to a diagnostic centre. .For those who don‘t know, and care. the Victoria Bateman team won the Canadian Fastball cham- pionship in Hull for the third season in a row. Team of Surgeons Anyway a team of surgeons is busy probing it at the moment. And if it doesn‘t work this time I‘m going to perform a mercy killing on it. With an axe or a Molotov Cocktail. Let‘s see. where am I? The past Labor Day saw some interesting things happening on the sports front. Of interest to local softball fans. of course, was the presence of Rich- mond Hill Dynes Jewellers‘ Bob Domik in the Oshawa Merchants' line-up. Domik noâ€"hitter The Merchants lost out but Domik did pretty well winning a couple of games, one of which was a noâ€"hitter. Another ex-Dynesman, Barry Timbers, also threw a no-hitter. Alas and alack, the Merchants were eliminated by losing their final two games to Nova Scotia and Hull Volants. Another interesting ball item results from the J eweller’s taking on the famed Eddie Feigner and his four-man ball team Saturday night at the CNE. So much for summer Wednesday, September 7, 1977 Except to say it‘s no secret the Birds would like to be playing in the Metro B loop which makes plenty of sense to me. Midland has already dropped out of the Mid~0ntario leaving a five- team loop (Thornhill, Oak Ridges, Barrie, Orillia and Owen Sound) Elementary, Watson It seems only elementary that the Metro loop is a natural for both Thornhill and Oak Ridges. Both competitively and the fact the teams are in our area. You have to have fans to survive and there’s no doubt in my mind which league will draw the fans. Is there in yours? More on this later. Congrats. Daryl Finally, congrats to ex-Rams‘ Daryl Rice who, it says here, has recently become married. Daryl wed Nancy Sue Gillespie of South- field. Michigan on Aug. 13 in South- field. My only comment is that I feel both Thornhill and the Jeweller‘s should be in the Metro loop for both logical and economic reasons. Which should break the hearts of some past Richmond Hill Rams’ la femme followers. That‘s if they aren‘t married already themselves. Daryl, incidentally, played for Grand Rapids last season and just recently returned from a hockey stint in Cortini, Italy. He played his US hockey at Michigan State University. An interesting thing about that game was the presence in the Dynes line-up of junior Paul Philip who got a double and triple off Eddie. Philip used to be a batboy with the Jeweller’s. Feel old, eh? Hockey yet Now a bit about hockey which certainly seems appropriate somehow. There I go again. A rumor or two has been swirling about the Thunderbirds this season but don‘t ask us to clear them up. Right now, anyway. Time do fly. Once again, congrats Daryl. Time marches The Jeweller’s won 7-0, yes, that’s right. They got 11 hits off old, old Eddie, who must be suffering the ravages of time. It didn’t used to be that way. However, nothing or no one lasts forever. I think Feigner played and lost all three games at the CNE. The three area hockey clubs â€" Richmond Hill Dynes Jewellers and Thornhill Thunderbirds of the Mid- Ontario Junior B Loop and Rich- mond Hill Rams of the A bracket â€" have all launched their practices. A late starter has been the Thunderbirds who were officially slated to start last night (Tuesday) at Thornhill Community Centre. fred simpson Hey, too many pucks season. Brumwell is shown loosening up at the first training camp session of the 1977- 78 season at Bond Lake Arena on Monday “We had no less than 96 players turn out for our first two practices,” said Rams’ head coach Ken “Satch” Brookes. “It was just unworkable." So coach Brookes got out the big axe and started chopping away and now, after four workouts, “we’re down to a more wieldy 28 players. “It really'wasfi‘t lnuch of a problem making cuts at the beginning,” said Brookes. “You can usually tell very If quantity was quality the Richmond Hill Rams would have been declared champions of the Provincial Junior A hockey league for 1977-78 after the first two practices. The loser will be relegated to first place in the consolation playoff series involving the bottom six teams in the league. This series operates in the same format as the championship rounds involving the first six teams. 7 The Rams have an affiliation with the Petes. easily who fits in or doesn't in the early going. It‘s later on your big decisions come in." The Rams‘ personnel for the new season is, obviously, still in a state of flux with a number of prospects but few actual signings of new players. The consolation will see second place McKinlay Drywall meeting the winner of the best-of-three set between Ronald’s Federated and the York Regional Police. The top team in this division, be it Blyth or Jenkin’s, will go against the victors of the H. J. Mills and Lake Wilcox series. The surviving clubs in both divisions among the first, third and fifth finishers will clash with the best of the second fourth and sixth place clubs for the championships of each division. The good news is the signing of goalie Gaines w_ill be played tonight Now see here, fellas Brookes during early-season workout at the local arena. Left to right are Greg Hamp- ton, Ron McDonald. and Bill Stephenson. When Coach Pete Artemchuk launched his 1977-78 Oak Ridges Dynes Jeweller Mid-Ontario hockey league training camp Monday night he found out it was more popular than he figured. ‘80 popular that two of the 70 turn-outs. on hand â€" brothers Bret and Kevin Geary â€" had travelled some 1400 miles to make their bid to play with the Jewellers. “The two Geary‘s are from Red Lake which is something like 174 miles north of Kenora," observed Artemchuk. It was sort of a reverse situation, to put it mildly, as regards a last year‘s Dynesman by name of Greg Bogaerts. Bogaerts not only wasn‘t in camp, he was in Munich, Germany doing his hockey training. “We were as surprised as anyone when we got a communique all the way from Munich asking for Greg's release,” said Artemchuk. “Naturally, we agreed.“ Bogaerts, who had one year of eligibility left in junior hockey, was apparently snapped up by the German club and will play hockey on the con- tinent this season. “We wish him well," said Artem- chuk. “Greg is a good, heady hockey player who can and did play as capany on forward as on defence.” Artemchuk will have his share of returnees this season along with some hoped-for “bright newcomers”. These incluae star goalie Doug Brumwell and other such standouts as Steve Sherman and Cam Reston, etc. “We’re being very selective this season," said Artemchuk. “That’s because we’re essentially a set club and we’re concentrating on strengthening certain positions.” Mitch Lovelock who should be a big bonus to the Rams‘ this season. Lovelock played in the shadow of regular goalie Brian Stankiewicz in 1976â€"77. Stankiewicz is over-age this season. The bad news will be the loss of scrappy rightwinger Ken Paraskevin who would have been starting his third season with the Rams and would have been an invaluable member with his experience and aggressiveness. Paraskevin wilT'be casting his lot with Michigan State where he has just been awarded a scholarship. “This is a blow because Paraskevin was on a line with John Olds and Danny Meanwhile, back to the Dynes’ camp The Richmond Hill Dynes Jewellers lost a league game last week and won an exhibition match against Eddie Feigner and his four- man team at the CNE. It was a 30 loss to Toronto Hustlers Wednesday night of last week in regular Beaches League play at Kew Beach. The Jewellers were completely stymied by the offerings of Hustlers’ Dwight Vanderveer who tossed a five-hitter at them while walking only one and striking out four. Losing pitcher was Doug Webster who allowed only five hits himself but three of them came in a two-run first inning. Webster struck out 12 batters and walked only one. That first inning saw Hustler’s George Sakura singling with the second batsman safe on an error. A single by Bruce Mortson scored one and another single by John Richardson brought in the second Dynes blitz Feigner Stephenson is a seven-year veteran of the junior hockey wars and the Rams expect his experience to help greatly. “We've done a fair bit of scouting during the offâ€"season,“ said Artem~ chuk, “and things look good if we can land the people we have contacted.” The Dynes exhibition schedule in- ciudes a game Saturday with Toronto Red Wings at Chesswood Arena at 7:45; one with the Toronto Young Bruins. Sunday at Centennial Arena; and a Monday home game at Bond Lake Arena at 7 pm, with the Etobicoke Canucks. Jones last year and it was one of our best ones," said Brookes. Come next Sunday the Wexford Raiders will be here for a 7:30 game an the following Wednesday will see Newmarket in for an 8:30 game. Also returning will be hard-nosed Larry Kimble. The Rams will be at home tonight (Wednesday) for an 8:30 game with North York Rangers at the Richmond Hill Arena. The Rangers were league champions last year. The Rams will go against Royal York Sept. 17 'm a game slated for the new Nobleton Arena. They got their final run in the eighth inning as Sakura tripled and came home on a fly-out. Only bright lighf in the Dynes’ offensive end of it was John Ross who had two hits. Saturday’s CNE epic saw the Dynesmen thumping Mr. Feigner and crew 7â€"0 coming up with 11 big hits. Richmond Hill got three runs in the second, two in the third and as many in the fourth Ari Fowler was the winning pit- cher allowing only four hits_.4 Marty Neymah homered for the Jeweller’s while junior recruit, Paul Phillip, had a double and a triple. The Jewellers are at home tomorrow night (Thursday) to the Oshawa Merchants in a doubleheader at the Town Park. Game time is 7:30 pm.
