Kathy’s arrangements, one entitled Garden Gleanings and the other called Daydreams, were awarded firsts in the decorative design classes for junior members. “I love it," says Kathy of the hobby her mother encourages. “I felt great about winning," added the nine- year-old Grade 4 student, “I didn't think I would do that well." Kathy‘s seven-yearâ€"old sister Nancy took a second-place spot in the design section. The second edition of the Thomhill and District Horticultural Society Garden show attracted over 300 entries and visitors from as far away as Holland and England. “We were a bit down in the decorative design section, but up in the hort,†said Evelyn Calladine, society secretary. There were 36 entries in design classes compared to a combined total of 220 for specimens in the flower and vegetable sections. Roses dominated the day, with more than 45 individual entries by members and several hundred donated by Concord Floral Co. The Aberdeen, Mermaid and Thornhill florists also offered arrangements. The donated flowers were arranged in floral tributes on standards borrowed from the Civic Garden Centre and later auctioned off to visitors. Each guest was allowed _to take home a rose. Mrs. Calladine men- tioned how much the donated flowers were appreciated because most of the members gardens were past their prime. Thomhill Kiwanis Club did much of the publicity for the show. CNE slides entertain seniors MARILYN MCDONALD A slide show depicting the history of the CNE, from its beginnings in the 18005 to the present, provided entertainment at last week‘s‘ meeting of Thornhill and District Senior Citizens. Elmer Gray, a 74-year- old Ex enthusiast from Scarborough, makes a hobby of presenting the slides to interested groups. Pictures of buildings torn down or long ago destroyed by fire and the structures which now have replaced them were offered for comparison to the 21 members present. One member recalled the original Women’s Building as the place where she changed her babies. One of those babies is now a grand- mother. Each year the Ex in- vites about 300 over-65‘s to a luncheon organized by the women‘s auxiliary of the world's largest annual fair. Lex J amieson, Thor- nhill S.C, president and his wife Jamie, this year received invitations and attended. A fall color trip to Hockley Valley is planned for Sept. 27.
