Reaching skyward It‘s not too old fashioned to say that the vitality of a community is reflected in the ac- tivities of its service clubs. churches. citizen groups, recreational and cultural organizations. Richmond Hill is blessed with many inâ€" dividuals who contribute greatly through such associations. Located as we are. on the periphery of a major Metropolitan area, it is important indeed that “community” in the broadest sense of the word is nutured and encouraged. Improvement Committee was asked “To plan, arrange, publicize co- ordinate a week of displays, meetings, en- tertainments and other events that would create Letters It was not until June that many students of Richmond Hill High School were aware of our venture, and many I have spoken with since our return had never heard of such an op- portunity. I was pleased to see in a recent edition of The Liberal, an article en- titled “Near London, England; Richmond Hill Students Back from Course". I was one of those fortunate enough to at- tend that course and I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of myself and the other 11 students to thank Mrs. Esther Beaupre, our teacher, counsellor, and more importantly, friend during those five weeks. Mrs. Beaupre was able to overcome the many obstacles she en- countered in organizing such a trip. There were a number of schools in the county from which we had no ex- pression of interest, and although an article was written and submitted to The Liberal in May by Mrs. Beaupre, it was never published. Our trip abroad really worth it Fortunately, in spite of lack of interest from those from whom we might have expected, we found a tremendous booster and promoter in the federal member of parliament, the Hon. Barnett Danson who contributed immeasu- rably to the success of our trip both before and during our stay in England. Iv would highly recommend this course to students in high school considering going. It would'b'e irfipossible to begin to tell of the value of this trip. So I trust that next summer’s session in England will receive support and publicity For (hat reason the ’Community’ important We would sincerely appreciate any form of advance publicity on an Open House planned by the Ontario Humane Society for Sunday, September 25, from 2 to 5 pm, in Thornhill. Here's our story‘: ‘ Last year, the OHS began an appeal to the public to raise $250,000 for 21 new headquarters building. Simply renting office space downtown (696 Yonge Street) was. unacceptable, and on January 1, we moved into our present home, at 8064 Yonge Street, Thornhill. increased awareness by residents of the attributes of the Town and its people“. To those who have laboured on behalf of the Civic Improvement Committee and on behalf of the many organizations taking part in this unique event we owe a continuing debt of gratitude. We residents will feast on your labours knowing well that as we do we grow. H. DAVID SCHILLER Mayor. ' v (We purchased two acres of land on which stands the Rectory of Rev. E.H. Dewar, 1860.) Our appeal for funds continues; we are half- way towaljd our objeppivg. The results of their endeavours are now unfolding as “Discovery Days." The “Days” are ones during which we should all attempt to begin anew and discover ourselves and our neighbours. The benefits to each of us will contribute to the community of all of us. from such local en- terprises and The Liberal. Our pioneer forefathers were very superstitious and some of their beliefs are still held by some people today. 7 Pérhaps you will find your favorite superstition among the following; It is bad luck if a black cat crosses your path. Of course many people have found that they have had bad luck in trying to ayoid the path the black cat chose â€" a trip and a fall could result in extensive bruising at the least and often in broken bones. White horses brought good luck in several superstitions. If you passed one when out driving, you stood in the cutter or buggy, crossed your fingers and chanted, “White horse, white horse, bring me good luck. Today or tomorrow I‘ll pick something up." A simpler version was that if you saw a white horse before breakfast you would have a good day. The most appealing white horse superstition was that when one was sighted a quick kiss of the person RAILROAD TIES i$1 Poplar HM 6”x6"x8'-16' On behalf of Coca Cola Canada Ltd., the Canadian Jumping Derby, and the Junior International Horse Shows; I would like to express our appreciation of your advance and post coverage of these im- Horse Show was success $11?thJ x 6’8” from $275.25 x 6’8” from $303.10 will Slhf' Glen. New shoes were never placed on a table because bad luck and disap- pointment were sure to follow. Soap was not cut with a steel knife but with a twisted string to prevent a dose of unfavorable luck. It was believed to be bad luck to give a brooch as a present unless the recipient gave the donor 3 pin of any kind in return. Similarly a gift purse should always contain a new penny or two to ward off bad luck from both giver and receiver. Not only that, it was: claimed this gluttony would ensure the taker would remain a spinster r‘“ bachelor for all time. If you see the new moon over your left shoulder, make a wish and it will come true, was another belief. The first star of the evening was also a good lu‘ck charm when one recited “Star light, star bright. first star I've seen tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight." Never, never walk beneath a ladder is another old superstition with a great deal of truth in it, as the walker might be hit on the head by an article dropped by the worker on the ladder.
